BOYS SOCCER: Woodmore returns to field after multi-year hiatus

After not fielding a team the past two seasons, Woodmore is back with a limited schedule this fall under the direction of first-year head coach Peyton Sorg, who is a former student-athlete with the program.

“I'm excited because we ended up getting enough kids,” Sorg said. “I went around the school asking for kids to play, and they all came together and got each other to play. I'm glad to see the program back.”

Sorg said he has 17 players on the roster, which includes six upperclassmen. Included in that group are two seniors who were freshmen the last time Woodmore competed — Andrew Drill and Rylan Vinson, who are both defenders.

Two other seniors — forward Landyn Sipe and midfielder Brandon Kayser — are also on the squad. Sorg said two more key players will be freshman goalkeeper Jack Avers and his brother, junior midfielder Blake Avers.

“I think (that group will) bring a lot of leadership to the team, and they’re skilled,” Sorg said. “Playing goalie is hard, and Jack has already proven he can play there.”

Sorg feels that his team’s defense could be a strength, led by Drill and Vinson.

“We have a pretty stacked defense,” he said. “It’s going to be hard to pick which starters I’ll have.”

Woodmore will compete with an eight-game schedule as an independent. The first eight matches will be on the road, beginning with Riverdale on Aug. 16. The Wildcats will host a pair of home matches to conclude the slate — Oct. 7 against Bowsher and Oct. 11 against Riverdale.

The roster is comprised of seven freshmen, four sophomores, two juniors and four seniors. The goal is to finish .500 or better.

“It’s hard because it's early, but I’d say the preseason has gone pretty well,” Sorg said. “We have a lot of young talent that I was surprised about because we haven’t (fielded a team) in a while.”
