Ohio Governor Mike DeWine, Lt. Governor Jim Tressel, and Ohio Department of Development Director Lydia Mihalik announced more than $258,000 in tax credits to help Ohio employers train and upskill commercial driver’s license (CDL) employees across the state.
Luckey Farmers, Inc. in Woodville is among those who received money. They were awarded $13,362.50.
More than 750 drivers will receive CDL training, strengthening Ohio’s transportation workforce and supporting the movement of goods and services statewide. The tax credits, through the Commercial Driver’s License Training Program, are designed to reduce training costs for Ohio employers and drivers while preparing current and future drivers for success in today’s high-demand economy.
“In Ohio, we’re creating opportunities that lead to good jobs and long-term stability for Ohio families,” DeWine said. “By expanding access to CDL training, we’re helping Ohioans gain valuable skills while ensuring our businesses have the workers they need to grow.”
Development is awarding tax credits to 18 companies across 15 counties for the credentialing of current and prospective employees.
“Through the CDL Training Program, we are investing in the employees who are driving Ohio’s economy,” Tressel said. “This program reflects Ohio’s commitment to equipping workers for reliable, good-paying jobs and supporting the transportation industry that keeps our businesses and communities moving forward.”
Employers of all sizes and industries registered to do business in Ohio and employ Ohio resident W-2 employees are eligible for the program. Employers can earn tax credits for half of approved training costs, up to $25,000 in tax credits.
“We are connecting Ohioans to good-paying, in-demand jobs while supporting the employers who keep our state moving,” Mihalik said. “These awards will help remove barriers to employment and address critical workforce needs across our state.”
The tax credit applies to the credentialing of both current and prospective employees. Eligible training can be conducted by external training providers on the Ohio-approved CDL course provider list or internal licensed training instructors. Credentials must be for Class A or Class B state-issued CDLs. Applications were reviewed and awarded on a first-come, first-served basis.
Applications for the CDL Training Program are released once annually, for calendar years 2023 through 2026.
