Posted

Clay, Gibsonburg and Lake each captured their respective division’s district championships in late May, and each will now compete in the regional tournament for a chance at a berth in the state semifinals.

Clay (22-5) captured a Division II district championship with a win over Sylvania Northview, 11-3, at Bowling Green State University on May 22. It was the first tournament game for the Eagles, who received a bye through the district semifinals.

The Eagles scored in five of six offensive innings with six different players scoring at least one run. Emily Cordell struck out nine while allowing just four hits and one walk in a complete-game performance. Grace Montgomery led the offense by finishing 3-for-4 with a triple, two doubles and six RBIs. Jenna Swartz also went 3-for-4 with a double and a pair of RBIs, and Ellie Haynes was 2-for-3 with a solo home run.

Clay was slated to face Westerville Central on May 27 at Shelby High School in the regional semifinals. With a victory, it was possible that the Eagles could have faced Anthony Wayne for a regional title on May 29.

Gibsonburg (18-3) opened Division VII tournament play with a district semifinal win over Sandusky Central Catholic, 11-0, on May 20. Then, they took down Monroeville, 11-1, for the district championship. Both games needed just five innings.

Not only that, but Gibsonburg also claimed an outright SBC regular season championship with another five-inning win, 10-0, over Lakota on May 26. It was a makeup game due to an earlier rainout.

The Golden Bears racked up six doubles, including two apiece from Emily Henderson (2-for-3, three RBIs) and Leah Hall (2-for-3, 2 R, 2 RBIs), against Sandusky Central Catholic at Danbury High School. Mia Brink also had a multi-hit performance, going 2-for-3 with one run and one RBI. Katie Hall and Mackenzie Muntz also doubled once apiece.

Gibsonburg then scored 11 runs on six hits in the district title win over Monroeville at Oak Harbor High School. Alivia Wauford had the lone multi-hit game, finishing 2-for-3 with a solo home run. Elly Evarts went 1-for-2 with two runs, two RBIs and one triple. Emma Jividen, Leah Hall and Brink each stole a pair of bases. Jividen added two runs scored along with a pair of RBIs.

Wauford produced two complete game victories inside the circle. In 10 innings combined, she allowed just five hits, three walks and one run while striking out 12.

Gibsonburg was slated to face Sycamore Mohawk on May 27 at Fostoria High School in the regional semifinals. With a victory, would have played for a regional title on May 29 against either Ayersville or Edgerton. Ayersville knocked off Tiffin Calvert in their district championship.

Lake (19-7) captured a Division IV district championship with a 9-1 win over Napoleon on May 19 at Northview High School. Then, they knocked off Upper Sandusky 8-2 for the district title on May 22 at Shelby High School.

The Flyers scored five runs in the second inning to take control against Napoleon. Myah Wypyhoski went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and one run in the leadoff spot. Norah Demory had a game-high two runs while finishing 1-for-3 with a double and a walk. Sailor Lindell knocked in a pair with a double, and Caity Extine went 2-for-4 with a run and a double. Parker Dart nearly tossed a no-hitter before settling on a complete-game victory. She struck out four while walking two and allowing two hits. The run she allowed was unearned.

Another big inning, this time a seven-run fourth, propelled Lake past Upper Sandusky. Sophia Rudey led the offense with a 3-for-3 performance. Wypyhoski (2-for-4, BB, 2B), Dart (2-for-4, R, 2 RBIs), Extine (2-for-2, R, 2 RBIs, BB), Sophia Gruetter (2-for-4, R) and Jada Jerew (2-for-4, R, RBI) added multi-hit games. Dart tossed another complete game, striking out six while allowing five hits, two runs and three walks.

Lake was slated to face Perry on May 27 at Clyde High School in the regional semifinal. The winner would have advanced to face either Bryan or Bellville Clear Fork for the regional crown on May 29.
