SOFTBALL: Woodmore hoping to take that proverbial next step

Posted

Coach: Scott Smith, eighth year

Last year: 13-13 (8-10 SBC River)

Key returning players: Kara Schneider (Sr., 1B); Liv Scavio (So., P/2B); Kelsey Kaylor (Jr., C); Emmaleigh Lawrence (Sr., 2B/OF)

Woodmore graduated Cameran Quisno and Kaitlyn Babka, but there are a number of key players returning in 2025, including three seniors in Kara Schneider, Emmaleigh Lawrence and Alivia Smith.

Junior catcher Kelsey Kaylor hit .419 last season to lead the Wildcats. The leadoff hitter also scored 22 runs to go with 14 stolen bases. Taylor Hill, who will split time between center field and pitcher, hits second and is coming off a season where she hit .368 and drove in 20 runs.

Schneider hits third and plays first, followed by pitcher/second base combo Liv Scavio (.297, 11 RBIs), third baseman Payton Whitcum, Lawrence, left fielder Aubrey Becerra, Smith and shortstop Camille Strong (.324, 18 R).

Woodmore coach Scott Smith, now in his eighth season leading the program, expects some big things from several of his players.

"I think Kara and Emmaleigh will each have a really good season,” Smith said. “Kelsey is one of the best catchers in the area. Camille has developed into a really good shortstop. Liv and Taylor are really good hitters, and they both now have the opportunity to be really good pitchers. And Payton is a freshman who has played a lot of softball. I have high expectations for (her)."

The good news is the Wildcats are a talented, experienced group that has the potential to make some noise.

The downside is they're in the Sandusky Bay Conference River Division with the likes of Tiffin Calvert, Hopewell-Loudon, Lakota and Gibsonburg.

"The SBC River division is a very competitive league," Smith said. "Many of the teams will be battling each other for the league title, and I hope we are one of those teams."

Last season, Woodmore went 13-13 and 8-10 in the conference.

"We want to be competitive in every game, win more games than we lose and make a run in the tournament," Smith said. "Last year, we lost in the district semifinals, and we want to go farther this year."
