Under radiant skies and surrounded by the lush beauty of Schedel Arboretum & Gardens, more than 320 guests gathered on Sunday, Sept. 7 for the 23rd Annual Hidden Garden Party — a signature fundraising event benefiting the nonprofit Schedel Foundation.

Early estimates indicate the event raised approximately $145,000, supporting the Foundation’s mission of providing unique opportunities for the study and appreciation of nature and the arts.

The afternoon began with a festive Champagne Check-in, accompanied by the soulful vocals of Trez Gregory, setting a celebratory tone. Guests explored the gardens on guided tours that culminated at the newly inaugurated Marilyn Bandfield Pavilion, made possible by a generous lead gift from Rick Kortier, son of the late Ms. Bandfield. Kortier was in attendance to witness the pavilion’s first major event since its dedication in May.

During the cocktail hour, attendees enjoyed live music by Strings of Choice, a gourmet appetizer spread, and a bustling Silent Auction featuring over 80 curated items. Mobile bidding was facilitated by Qtego, allowing guests to engage seamlessly from their smartphones.

Dinner was provided by Three Dudes & Dinner of Tecumseh, Mich., offering a culinary experience that included Asian braised short ribs, chicken teriyaki, wasabi whipped potatoes, and a decadent chocolate bomb dessert.

Emcee Jerry Anderson, beloved former news anchor and longtime supporter of charitable causes, welcomed guests and introduced Honorary Chairs Joe and Brenda Stearns.

Executive Director Rod Noble expressed heartfelt gratitude to all supporters of the Marilyn Bandfield Pavilion capital campaign, with special recognition for Kwest Group and founders Mark Murray and Ryan Odendahl, whose early contribution of a concrete pad three years ago laid the literal foundation for the facility.

The afternoon’s live auction, also led by Anderson, featured spirited bidding on exclusive experiences and luxury items.

Highlights included:

  • Two Mexico resort getaways, each sold twice thanks to donors Dr. Bill and Sue Horvath and an anonymous benefactor
  • Premium tickets to the Ohio State vs. Michigan football game courtesy of Mark and Nancy Reilly
  • Wine tastings and fine dining at Benchmark and Claude’s Prime Seafood
  • Original Labino glass art
  • A Toledo Mud Hens luxury suite experience for 16, courtesy of Eastman & Smith Ltd.
  • A shushi master class and wine dinner from 3 Dudes & Dinner
  • A gold bullion Krugerrand coin, donated by Rick Kortier, which fetched $5,500 in a spirited bidding war

Notable attendees included Ed and Laura Harmon, Phil Jr. and MaryLou Rudolph, Steve Taylor, Tom and Mary Noe, Zach and Ryan Miler, and Jack and Cyndi Sculfort. The evening also honored Mike and Carol Fahle as recipients of the 2025 Schedel Distinguished Service Award, recognizing their enduring commitment to the Foundation’s mission.

Planning is already underway for the 24th Annual Hidden Garden Party, scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 13, 2026.
