PREVIEW: Cardinal Stritch Cross Country

With all athletes expected to return and hopeful newcomers joining the team, Cardinal Stritch’s cross country head coach Chris Lau is going into his second season excited to continue growing the program.

Despite not having the numbers to compete as a full team last year, the individual athletes had the opportunity to achieve personal records in the TAAC meet and during the district tournament.

“The individuals got a taste of what it is like to compete as first-year runners at the varsity level,” Lau said. “Districts in northwest Ohio are challenging, and now they know what it takes to compete at that level.”

One returner in particular, Connor Rowland, is going into his junior year following a successful spring season with the track and field team.

“He has a strong determination within himself and is a natural athlete,” Lau said. “He has tremendous speed and needs to continue to build endurance. I’m looking forward to his progression as a runner and leader as a junior this year at Cardinal Stritch.”

A top newcomer for the team is Liah O’Brien, a sophomore Lau described as “very coachable” and “has a strong desire to be the best she can be.”

Lau highlighted that aspects of his coaching philosophy include commitment, effort, teamwork and having fun.

“Enjoy the experience, running is something you can take with you for the rest of your life,” Lau said.
