Prep softball roundup: Eastwood, Lake open season in dominant fashion

EASTWOOD (4-0) dominated its opening week, led by pitching duo Kenzie Hady and Addison Loomis, by not allowing a run over four games. The Eagles defeated Gibsonburg 4-0, Evergreen 4-0, Fremont Ross 5-0, and Tinora 12-0 in five innings. Including its scrimmages, Eastwood’s dominant pitching run includes seven total shutout performances.

In the season opening win over Gibsonburg at home, the Eagles got a two-run home run from Maddie Hartman, who finished 1-for-3. Sophia Rankin (1-for-2, 2 R, RBI, BB), Loomis (1-for-3), and Hady (1-for-3, 2B) also had hits, while Karly Wasserman had the team’s lone stolen base. Hady struck out 14 over seven shutout frames while allowing just two hits.

Loomis took her turn in the circle against Evergreen, delivering 10 strikeouts while walking two and allowing just one hit over seven shutout innings. The top of the lineup led the Eagles as Hady (3-for-4, 2 R, 2B) and Wasserman (2-for-4, R) had multi-hit efforts. Other notables included Rankin (1-for-3, RBI, BB, SB), Hartman (1-for-4, SB), and Makayla Hady (R, BB, SB). Loomis added an RBI and a walk offensively, as well.

Hady once again went the distance against Fremont Ross, striking out 14 and allowing just one hit and one walk over seven frames. She also went 3-for-4 with two runs, an RBI, a triple, and three stolen bases offensively. Rankin (2-for-2, 2B, R, RBI, 2 BB) and Loomis (2-for-4, RBI) had multi-hit efforts. Maddie Sorg also had a double, while Raegan Sabo had a hit, a stolen base, and a run scored off the bench.

Hady was even more impressive in the win over Tinora, striking out 14 and walking three over just five innings for her third complete game victory to open the season. Offensively, the Eagles racked up 13 hits led by Rankin (2-for-4, 3 R, 2B), Loomis (3-for-3, 3 R, RBI, 2B, HBP), Hartman (2-for-4, 2 RBIs), and Grace Meter (2-for-3, R, 3 RBIs). Stella Chlebowski also scored twice, walked once, and stole a pair of bases. Makayla Hady added another steal, while Sorg produced a double.

LAKE (3-0) opened its season with three victories by a combined 36-2 score against Northwood (13-0), Woodmore (13-2), and Liberty-Benton (10-0). The Northwood and Liberty-Benton victories each went five innings.

In the season opener against the Rangers, Lake produced one double apiece from Maddison Ankney (2-for-3, R, RBI), Parker Dart (2-for-3, 2 R, 2 RBIs, BB), Sophia Gruetter (1-for-2, 2 R, BB), and Sophia Rudey (2-for-3, R, 2 RBIs), while Dart and Norah Demory (2-for-3, 2 R, BB) each had triples. Myah Wypyhoski delivered the season’s first home run while also stealing a base. Sailor Lindell walked twice and stole a base. In a group effort, Dart, Lindell, and Wypyhoski combined for a no-hitter in the circle with 15 strikeouts. Dart and Lindell each had six, while Wypyhoski had three. The group walked just one batter and hit another.

While Dart was striking out eight in a complete game victory in the circle, Lake scored in all but one inning to produce a win over Woodmore. Wypyhoski (2-for-5, 4 R, 3 RBI, 3B, HR, 2 SB) led the offensive attack, finishing just a double shy of the cycle. Demory (3-for-4, 3 R, 5 RBIs, BB, HR), Dart (2-for-4, 2 R, 2 RBIs, BB, 2B, HR), Lindell (2-for-5, RBI, 2B), Caity Extine (2-for-4, R, RBI, 2B), Rudey (2-for-4, 2B, 3B), and Jerew (2-for-4, 2 R, 3B) had multi-hit performances, while Leah Vick and Gabby Moreno had hits off the bench in their season debuts.

The Flyers once again started strong against L-B, scoring all 10 runs in the first two innings. Dart (3-for-3, 2 R, 2 RBIs, 3B) led the offense, while eight others had one hit apiece, including Rudey (1-for-2, R, 2 RBIs, BB). Ankney had the team’s lone double. In the circle, Dart picked up the win after allowing just one hit and one walk while striking out five over three frames. Lindell registered three strikeouts while not allowing a hit over the final two innings in relief.

GIBSONBURG (2-1) opened its season with a 4-0 loss to Eastwood, but responded with road wins over Otsego, 9-7 in nine innings, and Bellevue 8-5.

Offensively, the Golden Bears faced tough sledding against Eastwood’s Kenzie Hady in the opener, getting single hits from Ava Amor and Mackenzie Muntz. Amor took the loss in the circle, striking out seven over six complete.

Gibsonburg responded with a thrilling, nine-inning win in the cold against Otsego, which featured a three-run, game-winning home run from Elly Evarts in the top half of the ninth. Overall, the Golden Bears racked up 19 hits as a team, led by Amor (4-for-4, R, 2 BB, 2B, 3B), Emma Jividen (3-for-4, 2 R, 2 BB), Mia Brink (3-for-6, R, SB), Muntz (3-for-6, R, 3 RBIs), and Hannah Crispen (2-for-4, R, 2 RBIs, BB). Amor got the win in the circle, striking out five over nine complete.

Katie Hall went 3-for-3 with three runs and three RBIs, including a pair of home runs, to help lead Gibsonburg to a win over Bellevue. Muntz went 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Amor delivered eight strikeouts in seven complete for the win, while also going 1-for-4 with a two-run home run. Brink and Jividen added one hit and one run apiece, while Brink also produced a pair of RBIs, a walk, and a sacrifice fly. Crispen (2-for-4, R) had a multi-hit game.

CLAY (1-1) lost its season opener against Maumee, 11-1, on the road, but responded with a 6-3 win over Oak Harbor in its home debut.

The Eagles produced three hits as a team against Maumee, led by a 2-for-2 performance from Grace Montgomery and a solo home run from Zoi Zahradnik. Lily Cordell and Jenna Swartz each had one walk apiece. Emily Cordell tossed the first two innings in the circle before Zahradnik went the rest of the way while striking out a pair.

Clay responded with a come-from-behind win against Oak Harbor behind a multi-hit performance from Ellie Haynes (2-for-3, R, 2 RBIs, SB, BB). The trio of Maddie Franke (1-for-3, BB), Zahradnik (1-for-4, RBI), and Emily Cordell (1-for-3, R, RBI) also had hits, while Lily Cordell had a sacrifice fly. Swartz, who scored two runs and drew a walk offensively, picked up the win in the circle by striking out three over 5.1 innings. With her team clinging to a one-run lead in the sixth with one out and two Oak Harbor runners in scoring position, Zahradnik entered in relief to strike out a pair before tossing a scoreless seventh for the save.

OAK HARBOR (1-2) opened its season with three consecutive road contests, defeating Southview 4-2, while falling to Whitmer 6-2 and Clay 6-3.

In the opener against Whitmer, the host Panthers produced the winning runs with a two-score rally in the fifth off Oak Harbor pitcher Morgan Lalonde, who struck out four over six frames. Kaitlyn Meloche (1-for-3, R) and Claire Blausey (1-for-3, 3 RBIs) had the lone two hits for the Rockets, and Blausey’s was a three-run, game-tying double in the fourth. Payne Lohman produced the lone steal for Oak Harbor, while the fourth run scored on a sacrifice fly from Karder Haas.

The Rockets then scored single runs in the third through sixth innings to take down Southview on the road. Haylee Robinson (2-for-4), Meloche (2-for-3, BB) and Lohman (2-for-4, R) had multi-hit games, while Delaney Johnson produced a double, and Maddie Lenke had a triple and a run scored. Addison Laubacher and Lalonde each had sacrifice flies. Lalonde got the complete game victory in the circle, striking out 12, walking none, and allowing just four hits.

Oak Harbor concluded the week with a rare Sunday game against Clay in which Robinson (2-for-3, 2B, RBI) and Meloche (2-for-2, BB, 2B) led the offense. Laubacher (1-for-3, R, SB) also had one of the team’s five hits. Lalonde struck out five over her six innings in the loss.

NORTHWOOD (0-1) lost its lone game of the week, 13-0 to Lake. Madison Huenefeld drew a walk and Amaya Dixon was hit by a pitch in what was the two baserunners for the Rangers. The duo of Huenefeld, who had one strikeout over two innings, and Camryn Haas evenly split the four innings in the circle for Northwood.

GENOA (0-1) opened its season with a 9-4 loss on the road at Port Clinton on March 24. The group of Mya Colvin (2-for-4, SB), Izzy Britt (2-for-4, R, RBI), Izzy West (2-for-3, R, SB), and Alina Kegerize (2-for-3, R) produced multi-hit efforts, while Kody Teet drew the team’s lone walk. Makayla Magrum took the loss in the circle but struck out three over three innings. Rachel Buehler struck out four over the final three innings in relief.

WOODMORE (0-2) opened the season with a pair of losses to Lake (13-2) and Margaretta (7-3).

Liv Scavio, who struck out one over seven complete innings in the circle against Lake, also went 1-for-3 with a two-run double. Payton Whitcum (1-for-3, R) and Izzy Helmke (1-for-3) had the other two hits for the Wildcats, who also got a run scored from Camille Strong.

Scavio tossed another complete game in the circle for Woodmore on the road against Margaretta. Aubrey Becerra (2-for-3, R) led the Wildcats offensively, while Kelsey Kaylor (1-for-4, R, RBI), Scavio (1-for-4), and Helmke (1-for-3, R) also produced. Strong added one stolen base, and Whitcum had a sacrifice fly. Olivia Sentle added the third RBI out of the nine-spot.
