Here is the results of the first week of the girls volleyball season. This is for matches played through Aug. 18.
Lake opens season with wins over St. Ursula, Southview
The Lake volleyball team has opened its season in strong fashion, sweeping Southview 25-16, 25-17, 25-19 on the road Saturday before dispatching two-time defending state semifinalist St. Ursula at home, 26-24, 25-23, 20-25, 25-20, on Monday.
In the season opening win against the Cougars, Lake got a team-best 12 kills from Caity Extine, while Kennedy Falkenberg (10) and Harlow Haberland (7) added 17 combined. Calli Conley led the way with 16 digs, while Savanna Saunders produced 34 assists and 10 digs.
In the win over St. Ursula, Lake was led offensively by Mylah Vorst’s 14 kills. Falkenberg added eight terminations, while Lucy Boos contributed 14 digs, 11 assists and six kills. Saunders totaled 20 assists and eight digs, and Conley had 21 digs.
The Flyers (2-0) continue non-conference play on Thursday by hosting Notre Dame. They’ll also host Northview on Saturday to conclude the week.
Miller’s big outing not enough, Eastwood falls to Tinora in opener
In a tough matchup against defending state semifinalist Tinora, the Eastwood volleyball team got 22 kills, seven digs and seven aces from reigning NBC Player of the Year Mack Miller in a 25-15, 21-25, 25-18, 25-22 loss on Saturday.
The Eagles also received nine kills and eight digs from Ivy Schrader. Olivia Riter had 35 assists and seven digs, and Stella Chlebowski had 12 digs and three aces. Maya Schmeltz added five kills and three blocks.
Eastwood will be back in action Thursday at home against Liberty-Benton before traveling to Whitmer on Saturday.
Oak Harbor opens with a pair of wins
The Oak Harbor volleyball team opened its 2025 campaign with a pair of sweeps over Port Clinton and Bellevue in a best-of-three-sets invitational hosted by Bellevue.
The Rockets (2-0) are back in action Tuesday at home against Toledo Christian before traveling to Clyde on Saturday.
Genoa topples Woodmore in matchup of Press-area teams
Genoa produced a 25-13, 25-10, 14-25, 25-22 win over Woodmore at home on Saturday in what was the season opener for both teams.
Woodmore is back in action Tuesday against Northwood at home, while Genoa is back in action Saturday at home against Port Clinton.
Stritch opens season with win
Cardinal Stritch opened its season with a straight-set win over Rossford on Monday.
The Cardinals will be back in action Thursday at home against Waite beginning at 5:30 p.m.
Clay, Waite, Northwood open season this week
Clay will begin its regular season slate at Northview on Tuesday before hosting Anthony Wayne in a huge NLL matchup on Thursday at home. The Generals finished 25-2 last year while making the Division II state championship match.
Waite, under the direction of former Rossford coach Joe Durco, opens its season on Wednesday at home against Woodward before traveling to Stritch on Thursday.
Northwood travels to Woodmore on Tuesday to open their season before hosting Fremont St. Joseph Central Catholic on Thursday in their home opener.
