New Pemberville mayor looks forward to what’s to come for the village

Pemberville’s council president Edwin Wozniak took over the position of mayor earlier this month following the surprise resignation of Carol Bailey, and council held its first regular meeting May 20 with the new adjustments.

During the meeting, council members discussed a variety of subjects such as a new power plant coming to Bowling Green, Pemberville’s upcoming car show and garage sale, and a flyover of two F-16 planes that will take place during the village’s Memorial Day Service.

With this summer marking the 150th anniversary of Pemberville, there are several events taking place to celebrate. Wozniak said that though he will be working at some of these, he trusts that the other people operating will do a good job.

“I’ll be stepping back, the people that run that, you just have to let them do it,” Wozniak said. “They know what’s going on, but I will not be telling them how to do that and they know what they’re doing.”

On a broader scale, Wozniak said that he wants to better communicate financial issues to the people of Pemberville, so that they can have a clear understanding of what’s going on in their town.

“Within the next several months, I hope to get a handle on the town’s finances and be able to understand them and be able to explain them to the public,” Wozniak said. “It has been an ongoing thing that we’ve been kind of spending more than we’re bringing in, and there’s been failed levees where it just wasn’t communicated good, so that’s what I’m going to be working on.”

When the council opened the floor for comments from the audience, an attendee brought up the idea of live streaming council meetings moving forward and posting them online on social media services such as YouTube.

“In the past, we’ve never talked about livestreaming council meetings, but I don’t think it’s something that any of us [the council] would be opposed to doing,” councilwoman Susan Rahe said.

Regular council meetings are held every first and third Tuesday at 7 p.m. For more information on Pemberville’s council meetings, visit Pemberville.org/village-services-and-government/council-minutes.
