Pemberville Memorial Day service honors those fallen

Posted

Pemberville’s American Legion Post 183 held a moving Memorial Day service on May 25 in observance of the brave men and women who sacrificed their lives for the freedom of all American citizens.

Additionally, since this year marks Pemberville’s 150th anniversary, the event was bigger than ever before, with Memorial Park flooded with plaques honoring over 350 hometown heroes.

One of the event’s attendees, Pat Bowe, said that her connection with those who were recognized is why she chose to attend.

“I grew up in Pemberville, and my son is on one of these pictures,” she said in reference to her son Ross Bowe, who served in the United States Air Force. “Of course, most of these people I know. They were neighbors, or relatives or friends.”

The plaques will remain in Memorial Park for viewing purposes through May 31.

Susan Rahe, a Pemberville councilwoman, expressed her gratitude for the people who made this event happen during her acknowledgement.

“Seeing so many people come together to place hundreds of signs throughout Memorial Park is truly a reflection of what makes this community so special, and a true example of Pemberville coming together to honor the fallen,” Rahe said.

Along with getting the chance to view the display of veterans, military personnel and first responders, attendees enjoyed a live performance of the national anthem from the Eastwood High School marching band and witnessed a special flyover by the 180th Fighter Wing Air National Guard.
