GPA: Kids Access to Dental Care Day

The Owens Community College Dental Hygiene Clinic is hosting a “Kids Access to Dental Care Day” for children ages 6 months to 18 years old Monday, Oct. 13 from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. in the Healthcare Education Center, Room 100.

Dental decay is one of the biggest unmet health needs. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly one in four children age 2-11 have untreated cavities.

The Dental Hygiene Department will provide free dental care such as cleanings, x-rays, sealants and fluoride as well as referrals for restorative work.

 Limited spots are available and appointments are required. Call 567- 661-7294 to make an appointment.

Eastwood Coffee Chat

The community is invited to join Eastwood Superintendent Brian Hughes for a casual morning of coffee, donuts and open conversation about Eastwood Local Schools Wednesday, Oct. 1 at 9:30 a.m. in the Community Room at Pemberville Library.

Attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions, share ideas, and stay connected with what’s happening in the district.

Oak Harbor celebrates  Athletic Booster Hall of Fame members

On Sept. 12, Oak Harbor Athletic Boosters celebrated the newest members of the Oak Harbor Athletics Hall of Fame at the home football game against Fostoria.

Inductees included:

Bob VanHorn –OHHS Swim Coach (1984–2000).

- 1989 Ohio Boys Coach of the Year & 1999 Ohio Girls Coach of the Year.

- Led both boys and girls teams to multiple league championships.

 - Also coached the 1992 SBC Champion Boys Cross Country team.

George Bergman – OHHS Wrestling Coach (1992–2025)

- Two-time State Runner-Up Team Coach.

- 2017 OHSAA Hall of Fame Inductee and 2024 AAU National Coach of the Year.

- Mentored numerous individual state placers and champions.

Ashley (LaFountain) Russell – Girls Tennis, Class of 2013

- Four-time State Qualifier and 2012 District Champion,

- Four-time SBC Champion and Girls Player of the Year.

Kelly (VanHorn) Simon – Girls Swimming, Class of 2000

- Four-time State Placer and 15-time SBC Gold Medalist

- Multiple-time District Champion and OHHS record holder in several events.

Greg Goad – Wrestling, Class of 1985

 -Three-time State Champion (1983 at Swanton HS, 1984 & 1985 at OHHS).

- Dominated at 145 & 155 lbs., building a legacy of excellence.

On Sept. 13, the inductees were honored at the Hall of Fame Ceremony and Banquet. The Athletic Boosters Hall of Fame Committee hosted the evening, which was attended by community members, inductees’ families and friends, board members, and staff.

Gibsonburg FFA Fall Harvest Dinner

The 2025 Gibsonburg FFA Fall Harvest Dinner will be held Friday, Oct. 17 from 4-7 p.m. in the Gibsonburg High School Cafeteria before the home foo          1``tball game against Willard.

The dinner will be served dine-in or to-go and includes a half BBQ chicken or half-pound roast beef, mashed potatoes, gravy, choice of two sides, roll, dessert and beverage.

A half-meal option including a half-serving of meat and choice of only one side is available.

The cost is $15 for a full meal and $10 for a half meal. Tickets are pre-sale, however, a limited number of tickets will available at the door.

‘Preparing to  Pay for College’

With the knowledge that paying for college is tough for many students, The University of Toledo is hosting numerous sessions about financial options and strategies to fund a college education.

Attendees will learn about:

  • Average cost of attending
  • Resources to reduce out-of-pocket expenses
  • Common local scholarship portals
  • Financial literacy resources

Sessions will be held Tuesday, Oct. 7, at the Locke Branch Library, 703 Miami St., Toledo; and the Oregon Branch Library, 3340 Dustin Rd., on Wednesday, Oct, 22, from 4-5 p.m. Students will be provided with a comprehensive overview of financial options and strategies to fund their college education.
