The Oak Harbor Junior High and High School Science Olympiad teams had an exciting day of competition on April 18, competing against the top 40 qualifying schools in Ohio from each division.
The high school team earned medals in two events, led by Derek Lochotzki and Kale John with a 6th-place finish in Helicopter, and Hannah Hartigan and Gray Warren with a sixth-place finish in Forensics.
A top 20 finish at the state level is a significant accomplishment, and several Oak Harbor students achieved that honor. Lochotzki recorded five top 20 finishes, Adam Kurtz earned three, John earned three, Hartigan earned two, and Warren, Ava Fiorilli, and Emma Bradbury each earned one.
The high school team placed 24th overall — an impressive finish among the state’s top programs and likely as one of the smallest schools represented at the competition.
This marked the fourth and final state appearance for Oak Harbor’s senior competitors: co-presidents Lochotzki and Hartigan, along with Madison Torres, Warren, Chris Zoltani, John, and Bradbury. Rising underclassmen competing included Aleigha Dusseau, Kurtz, Olivia Cherry, Fiorilli, and Carter Hartman.
On the junior high side, Garrison Strausbaugh and Nic Fiorilli placed seventh in Metric Mastery, while Zoe Wilson and Chelsea Meckfessel placed 10th in Helicopter.
Additional top 20 placings for the junior high team included two each from Strausbaugh and Wilson. Meckfessel, Fiorilli, Steven Sines, Philip Dehring, Camdin Randolph, and Tommy Revenaugh each earned one top 20 finish.
The junior high team finished 33rd overall. Team members included Wilson, Meckfessel, Dehring, Sines, Strausbaugh, Fiorilli, Revenaugh, Corbin Randolph, and Camdin Randolph.
