Oak Harbor’s DORA gets green light from the state

The State of Ohio has officially approved the Village of Oak Harbor’s application to establish a Designated Outdoor Refreshment Area (DORA) in the downtown district. A soft launch took place at the Oak Harbor Chamber of Commerce’s Independence Day celebration on July 3.

The approved boundaries stretch from Flat Iron Park to Locust Street and include all of Water Street, Mill Street, and portions of Main and Church Streets near Adolphus Kraemer Park.

“We’re excited to launch Oak Harbor’s DORA over our Independence Day celebrations,” Mayor Quinton Babcock said. “This is another great way to support our local businesses and create a welcoming, vibrant atmosphere in the heart of our village.”

Within the DORA, patrons can purchase alcoholic beverages from participating businesses—Happy Hour Inn, Black Swamp Tavern, and Perfect Imperfections Boutique—and enjoy them while walking within the designated area. DORA operates year-round, seven days a week, from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.

To support a safe and enjoyable experience, village officials said the Oak Harbor police department will provide enforcement and security, clearly marked signage will define the DORA boundaries and alcoholic beverages must be carried in official DORA cups provided by the Oak Harbor Area Chamber of Commerce.

DORA rules are as follows with cups: allowed daily from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., can’t be carried into another liquor establishment and must remain within the posted boundary signs.

Oak Harbor joins other Ottawa County communities—including Elmore and Port Clinton—in establishing a DORA, contributing to a lively and inviting environment for residents and visitors to enjoy shopping, dining, and events while responsibly consuming alcoholic beverages.

The DORA also supports the village’s Comprehensive Community Action Plan, which emphasizes downtown revitalization and expanding recreational opportunities along the Portage River.

“We’re excited to incorporate the DORA into our community events,” Sarah Beavers, Executive Director of the Oak Harbor Area Chamber of Commerce said. “This creates new opportunities for our downtown businesses while enhancing the experience for eventgoers and visitors alike.”
