Masonic Lodge plans chicken BBQ to support scholarships

The Oak Harbor Masonic Lodge #495 will present its 22nd Annual Chicken BBQ fundraiser on Sunday, April 26 at the shelter house at Veterans Memorial Park, 300 Finke Rd., Oak Harbor.

Proceeds from the fundraiser will go towards the annual college scholarship offered by the lodge to graduating Oak Harbor High School seniors.

Meals will be served as carry-out only from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m.

The cost of the dinner, which will be prepared by Roots Chicken, Fremont, will be $15. Meals will include a half-chicken, baked potato, green beans, roll, butter and brownie.

Tickets are being sold on a pre-sale basis; however a limited number of first-come first-serve meals will be available at the event.

Andrew Haley, a lodge officer who serves on the BBQ Committee, says the community has been very supportive of the annual event, which was canceled only a couple of times in its more than two-decade history – once several years ago when a fluke April snowstorm that dropped six inches of snow in the county and again when COVID hit.

“When the snowstorm hit, we rescheduled for the following weekend,” he said.

Haley said the lodge typically serves about 600 meals per year, with all proceeds going to fund scholarships, which typically total about $2,000. “The kids are always so grateful, Haley said. :We tell them that if all they’re doing is buying books or paying for half of a laptop, or even if they’re at a commuter college and it helps with gas money to get them back and forth, that makes us smile from ear to ear.”

“Raising the scholarship money aside, It’s also a good opportunity to get the lodge members together in community service,” he said.
