Each May, history comes alive for third graders in the Benton-Carroll-Salem and St. Boniface elementary schools.
With a recent visit to the Oak Harbor Log Cabin they experienced what life was like in this area during the 1860s. Volunteers guided the students in making butter, washing and drying clothes the “old fashioned way” and learning the history of Oak Harbor and the cabin itself. They also found the uses for the many antiques within the cabin and how much work the children were expected to carry out daily, which included emptying that dreaded chamber pot each morning.
The visit completed their social studies curriculum for the year.
The cabin was donated to the town by the Priesman family and with the help of the Air National Guard Red Horse Squadron and Lions Club, was relocated to the center of Oak Harbor on Church Street across from the post office.
This summer the cabin will host concerts featuring local talent and will be open for the Apple Festival in October, and Santa visits at Christmas time.
