Health department: Take steps to breathe better, live healthier

Posted

May is Asthma and Allergy Awareness Month and the Toledo-Lucas County Health Department is calling on residents to take simple steps to breathe easier and live healthier.

With warmer temperatures, blooming trees and an increase in outdoor activity, it’s more important than ever to stay informed and take action to protect one’s respiratory health.

This month, the health department is highlighting how clean air, active lifestyles and timely information can help residents manage asthma and allergies – while celebrating the health and environmental benefits of Bike Month across Lucas County.

Watch the air, stay informed

As spring continues, air quality, allergens and asthma triggers can significantly impact those with asthma or seasonal allergies. Local tools are available to help families stay ahead of the forecast:

  • TMACOG Air Quality Updates: The Toledo Metropolitan Area Council of Governments provides daily air quality alerts and forecasts, helping residents adjust outdoor activities on days with high ozone or particle pollution. Visit lucascountyhealth.com for more information.
  • Lucas County Asthma & Allergy Dashboard: This online resource offers real-time pollen counts, asthma education materials and air-quality monitoring to help residents manage symptoms and reduce risks. Visit lucascountyhealth.com/asthma-resources/ for details.

Pedal for Prevention

Bike Month is more than just a reason to ride; it’s a call for action for a healthier community. Biking reduces vehicle emissions, improves fitness and supports better respiratory health.

Through community partnerships and coalitions, TLCHD boosts efforts and awareness for active transportation and information resources to help county residents live their healthiest lives.
