Youth Writing Contest at Toledo Library
Youths in grades K-12 are invited to participate in the Toledo Library’s Ruth Blank Venner and Mary Jane Blank McCormick Youth Writing Contest.
Students are encouraged to craft a story in response to this year’s topic: “You’ve become an animal! Do you have fur, feathers or scales? Where do you go? What do you do?”
“This year’s writing contest invites young people to let their imaginations run wild,” said Nancy Eames, youth services coordinator at the Toledo Library. “By asking students to imagine life as an animal, we’re encouraging creativity, curiosity and storytelling and giving kids a fun, accessible way to express themselves through writing.”
Leon W. Blank established the contest to honor the memory of his sisters and to promote reading among area youth. Now in its 29th year, more than 21,000 students have participated since the contest was first held in 1997.
The contest is open to students in Lucas County and adjacent counties only. Teachers may submit entries for their class, but only one entry per student. To enter, a story must meet the following guidelines:
Grand prizes are awarded in four categories that are organized by grade levels: K-2, 3-5, 6-8 and 9-12. Prizes include $200 Visa gift cards for first place, $100 Visa gift cards for second place and $50 Visa gift cards for third place, plus a $25 Visa gift card for each branch finalist (one per location).
Entries are due by March 28 and can be dropped off at any Library location or submitted online.

Owens moving spring commencement to Huntington Center
In order to create the best experience possible for graduates and their families and due to increasing graduation numbers, Owens Community College will host its 60th Spring Commencement at the Huntington Center in downtown Toledo.
The ceremony will take place at 2 p.m. on Friday, May 8. No tickets will be necessary, and graduates can invite as many guests as they wish.
“Moving to the Huntington Center allows us to bring everyone together for one unified celebration,” said Dr. Blake Renner, Owens vice president of Enrollment Management and Student Affairs. “We are excited to host commencement at the Huntington Center and provide an inclusive, expansive celebration for our graduates and their families.”
In 2025, the college split five ceremonies over two days at its on-campus Center for Fine and Performing Arts, which seats 526 individuals in its mainstage theatre. In previous years, the college had held commencements in the gymnasium at the Student Health and Activities Center, which held thousands of graduates and guests in the bleachers and in seats on the floor. Unfortunately, the gym can no longer be configured to host a single, large ceremony.
Based upon projections, the Spring Commencement would have required at least seven ceremonies, split classes and guest limitations. More ceremony information will be shared at owens.edu/commencement.
