On Wednesday June 25, the body of a 16-year-old male was recovered from the Genoa Quarry at Veterans Park, following a coordinated dive operation involving multiple local agencies.

The individual was reported missing around 4 p.m. while lifeguards were actively searching the water. Tragically, his body was located and recovered after an extensive underwater search by dive teams.

The Allen-Clay Joint Fire District (ACJFD) was dispatched at 4:07 p.m. for a missing person. ACJFD personnel first arrived at 4:11 p.m. and initiated a search of the water and the surrounding area, as it was unknown if the person was in the water or not.

The dive teams of the Jerusalem Township Dive Team, the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office Dive Team, and the Toledo Fire & Rescue Dive Team were all requested to assist with the search. ACJFD was also assisted by the Genoa Police Department, Clay Township Police Department, Elmore Police Department, Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office, and the Village of Genoa.

One diver was transported to the hospital for a minor injury.

The body was located at 5:39 p.m. and removed from the water at 5:42 p.m.

The body was identified as a 16-year-old male who was not from the Northwest Ohio area. The family was at the Genoa Quarry at the time of the incident; however, the identity of the male is pending release due to notification to all family members.

“We are incredibly grateful for the partnership and rapid deployment of these dive teams,” said Fire Chief Mike Musolf of the Allen-Clay Joint Fire District. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the young man’s family and friends during this heartbreaking time.”
