With the funds awarded to the City of Oregon Fire Department, they have hired new firefighters.
The City of Oregon Fire and Rescue Department was awarded the SAFER Grant through FEMA on Sept. 24, 2025. It provides financial assistance to local governments for the purpose of increasing and/or maintaining the number of trained front-line firefighters within the community.
The SAFER Grant will provide funding in the total amount of $2,375,109.83. The over $2 million in federal funding is being disbursed over the course of three years and requires a local match of 25 percent the first year, 25 percent the second, and 65 percent the third year.
“This federal funding helps fire departments hire and retain firefighters so we can keep enough personnel on duty to respond quickly and safely to emergencies,” Oregon's Assistant Fire Chief Mark Mullins said. “For our community, this means better staffing, faster response times, and improved protection for residents, businesses, and visitors.”
The City of Oregon has used a portion of this funding to add nine firefighters to the Fire and Rescue Department.
The city and fire department are inviting the Oregon community to attend the swearing in ceremony for these nine new firefighters on Wednesday, April 22 at 6 p.m. at Fire Station #41, 1040 S. Wynn Rd., Oregon.
The public is welcome and encouraged to join and celebrate the success and growth within Oregon’s Fire Department and the increased ability to better serve the community they love.
