The Eastwood Board of Education held its monthly regular meeting on May 26 at the elementary school, where they recognized several students for athletic and academic achievements as well as their contributions to their community.
One of the students recognized was Makenna Nelson, a senior at Eastwood High School who was named April’s student of the month. During her recognition, Nelson was described as a diligent worker who wants to understand the deeper context of what she’s working on in the classroom.
May’s student of the month was Piper Sutton, another senior at Eastwood High School, who was recognized as an outstanding student who puts great effort into her work and maintains a positive attitude.
Drew Lashaway, Eastwood’s head wrestling coach, took some time to acknowledge his athletes who qualified for and placed at the 2026 OHSAA State Wrestling Tournament. Gabe Brough and Hunter Meeker were state runners-up, and Trace Johnson placed third.
For the first time in school history, the wrestling program had its first female athlete, Eli Rush.
“In our first ever season with high school girls, Eli Rush ended up placing sixth place in the state tournament as a freshman coming in here,” Lashaway said. “She’s done an amazing job representing the girls’ program.”
Three students at Eastwood Middle School also received recognition for their work done in class that made it onto a local billboard. Alivia Contreras, Kendra Meginnis and Adison Taylor collaborated on a piece of artwork for the Wood County ‘Unplug to Reconnect’ Campaign.
Similarly, another middle school student’s design was chosen for promoting a local art show. Breanna Kratzer created a logo for the Wood County Alcohol, Drug Addiction and Mental Health Services Board’s (ADAMHS) “Resilience Through Art Show,” an exhibit that allows participants to share their stories and/or perspectives on mental health and substance use.
“It is an authentic reflection for a community’s values and role of behavioral health as a mechanism for artistic expression,” read a message from the Wood County ADAMHS in regard to Kratzer’s work.
The Eastwood School Board meetings are held the third Monday of every month and begin at 6 p.m. at Eastwood Elementary, unless otherwise noted.
