Cemetery levies on the ballot in Harris, Allen Townships

Posted

Harris Township is seeking a 1.3 mill renewal levy, which would cost residents $22 for each $100,000 home valuation.

The levy would generate $78,206 annually and provide funding for the cemetery’s needs, including mowing, the sexton’s wages, an assistant’s wages, and the foundations.

The township’s fiscal officer, Laura Hazel, said it also helps keep rates low for taxpayers when it comes to gravesites, as well as openings and closings. She said non-residents have to pay a significantly larger amount than the township’s taxpayers for those services.

“We are doing some expansions on the cemetery where we recently bought some more acreage on the back of the cemetery for future growth,” Hazel said. “We are looking to put in a columbarium because we've had a lot of people interested in that. That’s kind of in our future planning.”

Hazel noted that it is a renewal, and if the levy passes, those funds would begin to generate in 2026 as the current one only provides funds through the end of 2025.

In Allen Township, they are asking for a 0.75 mill levy for the maintenance of cemeteries, also a renewal commencing in 2026.

It would collect $76,729 annually, amounting to $19 per $100,000 valuation.
