Benton Township, Village of Luckey look to renew tax levies

Posted

Benton Township is seeking a 5.5 mill renewal levy.

The township’s fiscal officer, Gayle S. Millinger, said that it doesn’t signify any tax increase. It’s even based on 1998 valuations, which is when the levy was originally passed.

“What's important is that it’s a renewal,” Millinger said. “It doesn’t cost the taxpayers any more money than what they paid before. It's the same levy we've had since 1998.

“It's based on their appraisal value back then, so they're not paying any additional tax. It just will continue on to what they had before, and we’re not asking for any increase or replacement. It's a renewal.”

The levy funds the township’s general resources.

“It just funds the township’s resources – roads, bridges, cemeteries, and parks,” Millinger said.

The levy would generate $284,570 annually at an $89 annual cost to the taxpayer per $100,000 valuation.

Luckey seeking 1.9 mill levy

In Luckey, they are sending a 1.9 mill levy to the ballot in order to provide money for the general fund.

It would generate $29,000 annually at a $43 cost annually per $100,000 home valuation.

The township’s officer, Barb Rizzo, said it will provide income for the general fund, which includes things like administration, the police, and maintenance. She especially noted the importance of it to the police department, as the general fund is where they get their dollars from.

“I hope people vote for it,” she said.
