Former Ohio University volleyball standout Ellen Herman has signed a contract to play professional volleyball with VT Aurubis Hamburg, a member of Germany’s 14-team premier league, the Bundesliga.

Herman is an Oregon native who attended high school at Central Catholic.

"I am eagerly awaiting my departure to Germany," Herman said. "It has been my dream to play professional volleyball ever since I can remember and now I can make that dream come true. Not only am I excited to play at a high level of competition, but I cannot wait to immerse myself in the culture and experience life on an international level."

At Ohio, Herman was a part of three Mid-American Conference regular season championships, three MAC tournament championships and four NCAA tournament berths. This past season, she helped the Bobcats reach the NCAA second round with a win over Notre Dame.

“It was an honor to coach Ellen,” Coach Ryan Theis said. “She was not only a difference- maker on the court, breaking almost every record in Ohio and MAC history, but she meant even more to this program and the Ohio volleyball family off the court. Her personality brought the community closer to our program and her work ethic, along with her effort, inspired teammates and fans. She exemplified what it means to be an All-American.”

Herman is the Ohio and MAC all-time leader in kills, as well as Ohio's all-time leader in points and attacks. She was a repeat winner of the MAC Player of the Year award and was named to the All-MAC First Team four years in a row. She was also named an American Volleyball Coaches Association First Team All-Midwest Region selection three times and selected as an Honorable Mention All-America on two occasions.

“Ellen will continue to excel at the next level,” Theis added. “Starting in Europe is a bit professional baseball’s use of a farm system. If you do well, you move up a level every year. This year the team she is playing for will be in the premier league. As long as Ellen stays healthy, I have no doubt that she will have a long and successful professional career.”

Herman, a three-time MAC All-Academic selection, was recently honored as an Outstanding Senior Leader at the Ohio University Leadership Awards Gala. A member of Chi Alpha Sigma, the National Student-Athlete Honor Society, she compiled a 3.4944 cumulative GPA while majoring in Health Service Administration.

"I will truly cherish my four years at Ohio because of the help and support I have received from my coaches and teammates," Herman said. "My coaches have taught me what it means to be a team-oriented player and to set high goals for myself, while my teammates have always brought the highest level of competition into the gym to consistently keep our program on top. I can't thank them enough for their help in achieving my dream in life!"
