Winnie M. Chasteen

Winnie M. Chasteen, 78 of Elmore, OH died following a brief illness Saturday, September 11, 2021 at Bay Park Hospital, Oregon, OH. She was born January 6, 1943 in Toledo, OH to the late John and Mary (Simonis) Osenbaugh. She was a 1961 graduate of Waite High School, Toledo, OH. On September 1, 1976 she married Oscar “Bud” Chasteen who preceded her in death on January 21, 2012. Winnie retired from (the now) CSX Railroad following 34 years of service (1968-2003). In 1997 she received her Bachelor’s Degree in Science/Paralegal Studies from Jones College, Florida. She spent many years working for a law firm in Florida before moving back to Elmore. While back in Elmore and retired, Winnie kept busy working different jobs around the area. She was a member of St. John’s United Church of Christ, Elmore where she was an active member of the Honor Workers, she sang in the choir, and played in the bell choir. She also held memberships in the Elmore Kiwanis Club, Elmore American Legion Post #279 Women’s Auxiliary, Elmore Historical Society, and Elmore Golden Oldies Senior Center. 

You could often find Winnie volunteering almost anywhere; she was always willing to lend a hand. During the Pandemic, Winnie would deliver meals to local seniors. You could also find her at the Woodmore High School on Thanksgiving Day where she helped with the community meals. In her younger years Winnie was an avid bowler and loved baking and trying new recipes. She enjoyed attending her lunch gatherings of both her class of ’61 and the Railroad Retirees. Winnie was also a cherished friend who was never too busy to get someone to an appointment, take a bus trip, or just sit around and visit.

Survivors include her daughters: Karen (Steve) Knox of Brunswick, GA and Marie (William “Todd” Carter) Harrison of Tiffin, OH; granddaughter Jena Harrison; niece Cindy, nephew David, and great nephew John; sister- in- law Marilyn Osenbaugh; 4 step- sons; and a step-sister-in-law Irene “Renee” (Paul) Floro. She was also preceded in death by her brother Robert “Bud” Osenbaugh.

A Celebration of Life Meal/ Visitation will begin at 11:30am on Sunday, September 26, 2021 in the basement of St. John’s United Church of Christ, 448 Rice St. Elmore, OH 43416. Following the Meal/Visitation everyone is invited upstairs for a Memorial Service beginning at 1pm with Rev. Margaret Mills officiating. Burial will be privately held by the family in the Harris- Elmore Union Cemetery. Memorial Contributions are going to St. John’s U.C.C. Online condolences may be shared with the family at
