Terra State Community College medical assisting student Alycia Wyant, of Fremont, has been named the college’s Fremont Rotary Student of the Month for December 2019.
The Gibsonburg High School graduate said she chose Terra State because it “allows me to continue my education by pursuing a degree in medical assisting while staying close to home to continue to raise my two girls.”
The working mother of two has earned a scholarship, a BLS/CPR certification, and first aid and safety certification. Her nominator, Medical Assisting instructor Terrie Hopkins, said she is proud of all she has accomplished in an academic setting.
“Alycia is a very caring individual who, in the classroom, will help her classmates who have questions or concerns before completing her work,” Hopkins says. “Her professionalism is exceptional and she is a great role model for others in her field of study.”
Volunteering is another way in which Wyant shines. She volunteered at the Fostoria Free Clinic and in Terra State’s Medical Assisting Student Organization (MASO). She also volunteers at her daughter’s school when they have field trips or class parties.
According to Hopkins, “Alycia has been an STNA for nine years and is committed to caring for the elderly. Her decision to further her education in healthcare is one of passion, because she is dedicated in helping others.”
Wyant has been working at the Ottawa County Riverview Nursing Home and is excited to see how her experience at Terra State will impact her career, she said.
After she graduates, she plans to stay at Riverview until she finishes her practicum and “will be actively pursuing a job at an urgent care or wound clinic,” she says.
