Last month, the Sandusky County Economic Development Corporation (SCEDC,) along with its Business Advisory Council partners, including Vanguard Sentinel Career and Technology Centers and OhioMeansJobs Sandusky County, held the annual Sandusky County High School Student Job Fair at Vanguard Career and Technology Center.
(SCEDC) is a non-profit organization that focuses on workforce development, business retention and expansion, and business recruitment for Sandusky County.
More than 180 students from throughout Sandusky County were able to shake hands, provide resumes and interview with 29 area employers from all industries at the job fair.
“The 2023 Sandusky County High School Student Job Fair provided MCRI and other local businesses the ability to further our interaction with the future workforce. Employers were able to speak with smart, talented and driven local high school students that normally, we would not interact with,” said job fair participant Andy Horn with Motion Controls Robotics. “Most importantly, students were able to see and hear firsthand the need for their skills as they transition into the workforce.”
Workforce development is an ongoing initiative of the SCEDC to overcome barriers to employment and address gaps in Sandusky County’s workforce pipeline by programs and different outreach efforts.
“Having workforce development programs is vital to attracting companies to Sandusky County because we are creating a pool of workforce by creating programs to reach the younger generation,” said Beth Hannam, SCEDC executive director. “To stay competitive, current Sandusky County companies look to the SCEDC to help with building the county’s workforce, as well through the SCEDC’s programs. We want our students to know that there are great-paying jobs in all industries right here in Sandusky County.”
The SCEDC is taking a multipronged approach to workforce development that educates both students and school personnel on job opportunities and career pathways available in Sandusky County. The SCEDC works alongside the Sandusky County Business Advisory Council to create programs including the THINK Manufacturing Career Showcase for Sandusky County ninth-grade students, the High School Student Job Fair, the Teacher Business Bootcamp, student bootcamps and bus tours for school administrators, teachers and coaches of influence.
