Ronald "Ron" L. Martin

Ronald “Ron” L. Martin, 88, of Genoa, Ohio, passed away surrounded by family, after a brief illness on Sunday, May 8, 2022, at Mercy-St. Vincent Medical Center. Ron was born in Millbury, Ohio on July 18, 1933, the son of August J. and Anna J. (Mang) Martin, Sr. He graduated from Genoa High School in 1951 and became a full-time farmer in 1956.  He met and fell in love with Marlene J. (Sondergeld) and on April 26, 1958, they were married at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Genoa. Ron earned a Science and Business Certification from The Ohio State University College of Agriculture in 1965.
Ron and Marlene started their married life and family on a farm in Graytown, Ohio. In 1972, they made their home and continued to grow their family on a farm in Lake Township where they remain to this day. Ron was a farmer who was active in the Ottawa County Farm Bureau and the Ottawa County Soil and Water Conservation District Board of Supervisors. He was awarded the Outstanding Cooperator of the Year in 1986 by the Wood County Soil and Water Conservation District. Ron was also an active member of the Genoa FFA Alumni, the Lake Township Zoning Board of Appeals and the Knights of Columbus, Genoa.
After Ron’s retirement, he and Marlene spent over 25 years wintering in Bonita Springs, Florida where they enjoyed the warm climate, played Bean Bag, Shuffleboard and made many good friends. Ron was known as “Mr. Fix-it” during his Florida winters. Many times he had his van loaded with tools he needed to help his friends and neighbors out!  Ron was an avid and lifelong Ohio State Buckeyes fan along with being a dedicated gardener, bird watcher, and farm tractor and truck restorer. Ron was resourceful in creating and modifying many of the tools, implements and equipment he used on the farm and in his garden.
