Ottawa County Senior Resources celebrating March for Meals
Each year at this time, Ottawa County Senior Resources joins similar programs across the nation in celebrating March for Meals.
The monthlong celebration honors the 1972 amendment that added a national nutrition program to the Older Americans Act of 1965. That amendment paved the way for Meals on Wheels, an organization with which Senior Resources partners to provide more than 300 meals each weekday to seniors throughout Ottawa County.
According to the Meals on Wheels website, “A knock on the door might not seem like a big deal to many of us, but to a homebound senior, it could signal the arrival of the only person they might see all day or all week long. It brings hope. It brings health. It brings the nutrition and care that will completely make their day. A knock from Meals on Wheels can even save lives.”
Senior Resources’ Home Delivered Meals drivers exemplify that statement, according to Kim Haddix, Senior Resources director. During their daily route service, drivers not only deliver nutritious meals, they also have helped seniors who have fallen, suffered mental health crises, were in need of food for pet companions and much more, Haddix noted.
Throughout the month of March, community partners are joining drivers on their routes, engaging with seniors and raising awareness for the Home Delivered Meal Program.
“We are extremely proud to show off our community service and our dedicated staff, who always go above and beyond for our seniors,” Haddix said.
