Brown Rd. project starting
Construction is scheduled to start Sept. 9 on a sanitary sewer project along a stretch of Brown Road in Oregon.
The contract for the project has been awarded to Taylor Excavating, Inc., Delta.
The company will install the sewer line along the north side of the road between residences at 3425 Brown and 3535 Brown – east of Coy Road.
Individual sanitary sewer taps will be provided for properties within the petitioned project area. The work will occur within the public right of way and the established sanitary sewer easement.
The contractor has indicated that final grading and seeding for the project will not be completed until all testing has been completed on the sewer.
The scheduled completion date is Nov. 8.
The contractor plans to have Brown Road remain open to traffic between Coy and Lallendorf roads throughout construction. Access to driveways within the project area will be interrupted during some stages of construction.

Zoning change
approved
Oregon City Council has approved a change in zoning of four parcels that will pave the way for a Waffle House restaurant locating in the area of Ansonia and Wheeling streets.
The parcels are located at 913 and 917 Ansonia Street and 908 and 918 S. Wheeling Street.
All four had been zoned R-2 Medium Density Residential District and will be rezoned to Dustin Road C-4 Business District.
Walter Barineau, a real estate director for Waffle House, Inc., filed the applications for the zoning changes on behalf of the parcel owners.
The city planning commission previously approved a recommendation for the zoning change.

County starting
road projects
Ottawa County and a few townships have contracted with Henry W. Bergman, Inc, for road repairs.
The work is scheduled to begin Sept. 6 and conclude Sept. 13. Work hours are 7 a.m.to 7 p.m. and the project will require full closures. Buses and emergency vehicles will be permitted but other motorists are advised to find alternate routes.
The work is expected to be done in the following order:
-Martin-Williston Road, from State Rt. 579 to Walbridge East Road.
-Walbridge East Road, from Opfer-Lentz to Nissen Road.
-Trowbridge Road, from Nissen Road to Elliston-Trowbridge Road.
-Hellwig Road, from Nissen to Elliston-Trowbridge.
-Fulkert Road, from State Rt. 51 to Nissen.
-Camper Road, from State Rt. 51 to Genoa-Clay Center Road.

TMA to host 9th
Annual Block Party
The Toledo Museum of Art (TMA) will hold its ninth annual Block Party on Saturday, Sept. 14, from 3- 7 p.m. The free event is open to all ages and will feature live performances, interactive art-making activities and artistic demonstrations.
The block party will take place across the museum’s 37-acre campus including part of Monroe Street, which will be closed to traffic between Parkwood and Scottwood avenues. Activities will extend into the Edward Green Beau-Arts Building, where visitors can view the new exhibition, “Ethiopia at the Crossroads,” and into the Glass Pavilion where visitors who preregister will experience an Ethiopian coffee ceremony performed by an Ethiopian digital artist collective.
In addition, Adam Levine, Edward Drummond and Florence Scott Libbey President, Director and CEO, TMA, will award the Key to the Museum to a community leader who exemplifies diversity, community, innovation and trust.
Entertainment for the day will feature:
• 3-3:30 p.m.: Glass City Steel, Toledo School for the Arts’ steel drum band.
• 3:45-4:30 p.m.: DJ Marc Folk.
• 4:45-5:45 p.m.: Island Guys, a Caribbean steel drum band from Detroit.
• 6-7 p.m.: Headline performance by Ethio Dankira Traditional Group, an Ethiopian music and dance group based in Washington, D.C.
Other activities will include:
• Aerial acrobats and roaming performers from Birds Eye View Circus.
• An interactive art display installed by Gerard Nadeau, assistant professor, Department of Architecture and Environmental Design, Bowling Green State University.
• Outdoor glassblowing demonstrations featuring Ellie the Baby Dragon, TMA’s mobile glassblowing furnace.
• Art-making activities for all ages, outside and inside the Green Building.
• Free health screenings provided by Paramount Health Care.
For exclusive block party perks, visitors are encouraged to preregister for the event online or by phone before Sept. 12. Non-members will receive a free ticket to the “Ethiopia at the Crossroads” exhibition, and TMA members will receive an “Ethiopia at the Crossroads” souvenir poster.

Honor Flight plans
September Mission
Flag City Honor Flight (FCHF) is preparing for its 28th mission on Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2024, to take 87 veterans, primarily from the Vietnam War era, to Washington, D.C., to visit memorials built in their honor.
Departing from Toledo Express Airport in the morning, Veterans will embark on a one-day trip of a lifetime. The itinerary includes visits to the Iwo Jima Memorial, Korean Memorial, Vietnam Memorial, WWII Memorial, and Arlington National Cemetery. Veterans do not pay to fly.
The public is invited to a Welcome Home celebration to honor returning veterans. Doors will open at 7 p.m. at 11777 W. Airport Service Rd., Swanton. The flight is expected to return at 8:30 p.m. Attendees are encouraged to wave flags, cheer loudly, and shake hands with returning veterans.
This flight is sponsored by Marathon Petroleum, a partner of Flag City Honor Flight since 2014. As part of the sponsorship, employees will serve as guardians to veterans on this flight, allowing them to witness the impact firsthand—an opportunity made possible through the flight sponsorship.

Explore the Crafts
Explore the Crafts will return to Sauder Village on Saturday, Sept. 14.
From 10 a.m.-5 p.m., skilled artisans will showcase their handiwork throughout the historic village. Guests will be invited to roll up their sleeves and participate, offering a unique opportunity to learn directly from the experts and possibly ignite a new passion. Activities will include crafting reed ornaments, using a peg loom, printing bookmarks, cordage making, wool carding and candle dipping.

Learn history of the
Great Black Swamp
Discover the history of The Great Black Swamp at the Walbridge Library on Wednesday, Sept. 18 at 6:30 p.m.
The history of The Great Black Swamp is not the description of the mud, but the stories of the people who settled within it. Some of those people were great men, such as Tecumseh or William Henry Harrison, and others were simple 4-year-old girls lost to history. Each person, great or small, had a story to tell. Learn more about these stories with Mike McMaster, education coordinator at the Wood County Museum.
No registration is required. The library is located at 108 N. Main St.

Scarecrow Contest
Individuals, businesses and organizations are invited to enter the Oak Harbor Chamber of Commerce’s Downtown Scarecrow Contest.
Scarecrows must be in good taste and appropriate for family viewing. No adult, political, violent or gruesome themes will be accepted.
Entries, which must freestanding and not attached to any village or private property, will be displayed in downtown Oak Harbor from Sept. 29-Oct. 31. Participants must pre-register to be eligible for prizes. Registration will be held through Sept. 29. Registration via email at chamber@oakharborohio.net. There is no fee to enter.
All displays must be in place by Sept. 29. A public voting period will be conducted from Sept. 30-Oct. 14. Prizes will be awarded for the top three scarecrows. Winners will be announced Oct. 15. Displays must be removed by Nov. 1.

District office
to be accessible
during road closure
State Route 582 will be closed between Mercer Road and SR 25 from Sept. 9 through November for the construction of a roundabout by the Wood County Port Authority.
Main offices of the Northwestern Water and Sewer District (The District) at 12560 Middleton Pike will remain accessible via eastbound SR 582 from SR 25 during the road closure.
There will be no access from the I-75/SR 582 interchange. Visitors trying to access The District office from I-75 should take the detour: I-75 to I-475 to SR 25.
The WaterShed at the main office will also remain open, although there may be short-term closures. While access to the WaterShed can be made via SR 25, customers are encouraged to use other WaterShed locations during road construction.

Library to host job fair
The Toledo Library is partnering with Ohio Means Jobs Lucas County to host a job fair Friday, Sept. 20, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Main Library, 325 Michigan St., Toledo.
Attendees will be able to meet with recruiters from a variety of companies and organizations.
The job fair will take place in the Main Library Atrium, where attendees will have the opportunity to meet with representatives from a variety of local businesses, non-profits, government agencies, and more.
In advance of the event, OMLC will host two resume workshops, set for Tuesday, Sept. 17 and Wednesday, Sept. 18 from 5-6 p.m. at the Main Library. Attendees will receive online job searching tips, resume and cover letter writing help, and more.
