War Bonus Ending
The Ottawa County Veterans Service Office reminds Operation Enduring Freedom- and Afghanistan-era veterans that the Ohio Veterans Bonus Program offers a bonus for military service between Oct. 7, 2001 and Aug. 30, 2021. Once a veteran has received $500 for service anywhere in the world, or $1,000 for service in a designated country, or the maximum $1,500 bonus, he or she is not eligible for additional funds, even if they served in multiple conflicts. Applications for the bonus are accepted for three full years following the end of the Afghanistan conflict, which means the program will cease on Aug. 30, 2024.
Call the Ottawa County Veterans Service Office at 419-898-2089 with questions or assistance completing the application.
Museum looking for
Purple Heart recipients
The Ottawa County Museum is searching for Ottawa County Purple Heart recipients, or recipient family members, for their ongoing Purple Heart Museum Trail project.
These individuals will be honored during National Purple Heart Day on Wednesday, Aug. 7, at the Liberty Aviation Museum in Port Clinton.
To date, the museum has honored more than 30 Purple Heart recipients or family members.
In order for recipients or family members to be honored, they must complete an Ottawa County Purple Heart registration form, as the military doesn’t keep a list of Purple Heart recipients. Registration forms are available at the museum, located at 126 W. 3rd St., Port Clinton, open Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday, 12-3 p.m., or by contacting museum board member Dave Barth at 419-357-2057 or drb360@gmail.com. Registration forms must be received by Tuesday, July 30 in order to be honored at the Aug. 7 ceremony.
The Purple Heart is awarded to military members wounded or killed in combat. The criteria used to determine the medal has changed over the years and is evaluated on a regular basis.
The Ottawa County Museum was designated a Purple Heart Trail Museum in January 2023 and is one of 15 museums in the country to have the designation. The designation requires the museum to develop a database of Purple Heart recipients; recognize Aug, 7 as National Purple Heart Day by holding a ceremony honoring Purple Heart recipients and create a display in the museum. The recipient book is at each public library in the county and the museum.
Wynn, Corduroy
roads to be
resurfaced
A resurfacing project on Wynn and Corduroy roads in Oregon is scheduled to start July 16, according to the city’s public service department.
Wynn Road, from Corduroy Road to Cedar Point Road, a distance of about one mile, and about one mile of Corduroy Road, between Wynn and Stadium roads, are being milled and resurfaced.
The Shelly Co., Findlay, Ohio, has been awarded the contract.
The city has received a grant from the Toledo Metropolitan Area Council of Governments Transportation Improvement Program for the project.
The contractor will maintain one lane of traffic throughout the project limits. Access to driveways will be available at all times except when the paving operation is in front of the drive. Emergency access to drives will be available at all times. I
