Memorial Day Service
The Genoa American Legion will be holding its annual Memorial Day Remembrance Service at the Clay Township Cemetery, 439 S. Opfer-Lentz Rd., Elmore, on Monday, May 27, at 9 a.m.
Guest speakers will be Flag City Honor Flight Director, Robert Weinberg, and local pastor Tim Davies. The Genoa High School Band and Genoa American Legion Band will perform. The Cannoneers, of Gibsonburg, will provide artillery.

Hayes medal set
The Hayes Presidential Library & Museums and U.S. Mint are teaming up to talk about the mint’s new President Rutherford B. Hayes medal and Hayes Presidential’s Morgan Silver Dollar during a program on Thursday, May 16. The free event will take place virtually at 6:30 p.m. Login information will be posted at rbhayes.org.
In February, the mint released a silver medal commemorating President Hayes, as part a series of presidential medals the mint has released.
During the program, Jennifer Warren, director of legislative and intergovernmental affairs for the U.S. Mint, Department of the Treasury, will discuss the presidential medal program. In addition, Josh Dubbert, Hayes Presidential historian, will discuss President Hayes’ economic policies.
Kevin Moore, Hayes Presidential curator of artifacts, will show pictures of the Morgan Silver Dollar and presidential medal that are part of Hayes Presidential’s collections. The Morgan Silver Dollar was given to Hayes during his administration and is on display in the Hayes Museum.

‘Birding for Everyone’
A free workshop entitled, “Birding Essentials for Everyone,” will be presented on Saturday, May 18, at Camp Sabroske, 4405 N. Toussaint North Rd., Oak Harbor.
Naturalists Bill Beatty and Jan Runyan will lead the workshop. The day’s events will begin at 8:30 a.m. with birding at Camp Sabroske’s habitats. A hot dog lunch will run from 11 a.m.-1 p.m., followed by the workshop at 1 p.m.

5K-9 Walk/Run,
Family Mutt Strut
The City of Oregon is partnering with Jake & Cooper’s Bark Park to hold the 2nd Annual 5K-9 Walk/Run and 1-Mile Family Mutt Strut on Sunday, May 19, beginning at 9 a.m. at the Eastern Community YMCA, 2960 Pickle Rd., Oregon.
The event, which benefits Jake & Cooper’s Bark Park, will also promote awareness of mental health and addiction.
The 5K is open to runners without dogs. The 1-Mile Family Mutt Strut is open to everyone.
The 5K starts at 9 a.m. and will take runners on a loop course to Dustin Road, by the Oregon Branch Library, Cardinal Stritch Catholic High School & Academy and through the Hallschild Subdivision.
The Family Mutt Strut will start at 9:30 a.m. and follow the new developing street across from the YMCA to Dustin and Back to the YMCA.
Food trucks, street vendors and a DJ will be available from 8 a.m.-noon. There will also be a best-dressed dog competition, and prizes for male and female race winners. The Clay High School Choir will be on hand to sing, “The National Anthem.”

Elections board
meeting set
The Ottawa County Board of Elections is meeting May 16 at 10:30 a.m. for a regular board meeting and to address any other business that comes before the board. The meeting will be held at the board office, 8444 W. State Rt. 163, Oak Harbor, in the Veterans Memorial Building.
