Lyn Marie (Wingate) Geiser

Lyn Marie (Wingate) Geiser passed away on Friday, June 9, 2023, in Worthington, Ohio after a lengthy illness under hospice care.

Lyn was born to Dorance and Bertha (Schwamberger) Wingate in 1941 and grew up on their family farm near Genoa. She still considered Genoa her home even after living in Gahanna, Ohio for the last thirty years. In her heart, she never stopped missing her hometown and her friends there.

While growing up, Lyn was active in school extracurriculars, Rainbow Girls, Girl Scouts, and music of all types including choir (both at school and church), as well as learning the accordian, piano, organ and, later, the bodhrán. She later sang with the university chorus in college and passed her musical talents down the family tree through her children and grandchildren.

Lyn graduated from Genoa Area HS in 1959. While a student, she authored the current lyrics to the Genoa alma mater and was very proud to be a Comet. Lyn cared deeply for her childhood friends and kept in contact with many of them over her life. Planning and attending their frequent class reunions was a highlight for her.

Lyn attended Ohio State University and graduated with a Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN) in 1963. Nursing was her lifes passion which led her to work in the fields of psychiatry, neonatal and GI at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Toledo. In the late 1970’s, she became the school nurse first at Cardinal Stritch HS and later Genoa Area Schools for the remainder of her career. She loved helping all of the students and knew them all by face and name long after they graduated. Many still tell stories about how she impacted them and their lives.

Lyn married Paul Geiser in the chapel at St John’s United Church of Christ on in 1964. Their union produced four children who they raised together in Genoa, Ohio. In 1990, their “for better or worse” marriage vows were tested when Lyn suffered a ruptured brain aneurysm. It was very difficult for the fiercely independent Lyn to adjust to her new life circumstances and her need to accept help from others. Paul stepped in and became her full time caregiver for the rest of his life. He was dutiful and loving in this role.

After moving to Columbus, Lyn and Paul were active supporters of the New Albany and Gahanna sports teams and avidly attended many Ohio State sporting events including the football, volleyball, basketball, hockey, and wrestling teams, where they befriended many players and coaches. Lyn became an usher at Ohio State football games and was awarded the Robert M. Duncan Alumni Citizenship Award from the Ohio State Alumni Association in 2004. She later became a Master Gardener Volunteer through the Ohio State University Extension.

Lyn was active in the field of disability advocacy around Ohio State’s campus as well as for the City of Columbus and even at the state level. She remained committed to championing the underdog throughout her life.

Lyn is survived by her children, Paul Daniel, Amy (Karl Borko) Mullins, Matthew (Erika), and Christopher, her grandchildren, Meghan, Kylie, Keon, and Emily, her great-granddaughter, Emma, as well as numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul, her parents, and brother, Ronald.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in Lyn’s name to Canine Companions for Independence (CCI) in Delaware, Ohio at https://canine.org/service-dogs/sponsor-a-puppy/ or the OSU Women’s Intercollegiate Athletics Program Fund (303493) at www.osu.edu/giving/

The family will hold graveside services in Clay Township Cemetery on June 19th, 2023 at 11am and all are welcome to attend. Robinson-Walker Funeral Home & Crematory, 501 West Street, Genoa, Ohio had the honor of assisting Lyn’s family. Online condolences can be made at www.walkerfuneralhomes.com
