Lourdes, Venier at WHAC meet
The Lourdes University golf team finished its second Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference jamboree of the season in ninth place at Twin Lakes Golf Club in Oakland Township, Mich.
Jenne’ Venier (Eastwood) shot 97 on day two to finish at 196.
The Gray Wolves fired a final round 377 to finish the event at 740, 12 strokes behind eighth place Cornerstone. Indiana Tech won the tournament at 591 (299-292), 22 shots in front of runner-up Northwestern Ohio (304-309).
“We hit the ball really well today,” coach Gil Guerrero (Waite) said after the tournament. “Unfortunately our short game and putting really hurt us. We had way too many three-putts and bad chips.”
In the first jamboree, Venier improved 19 strokes from one round to the next, carding a 114 before posting 95 to finish at 209. Lourdes completed a suspended first round as well as all of round two and finished in ninth place at Chemung Hills Golf Club in Howell, Mich.
The Gray Wolves bounced back from an opening round 413 to post 374 in round two, finishing the event at 787. Lourdes was 22 shots behind eighth place Cornerstone (381-384) and 39 strokes in front of 10th place Michigan-Dearborn (428-398). Northwestern Ohio took home top honors, shooting 655 (329-326) over 36 holes, 20 shots better than runner up Indiana Tech (339-336).
“The two-day WHAC event was extremely difficult,” Guerrero said after the second day of play. “The course played super hard and we had all kinds of problems putting to the difficult hole placements. After yesterday, I wasn’t sure if any of my players would come to play today, but they did and played so much better. I am very proud of how they responded after yesterday’s round.”
