Health briefs: Mercy Health offers Saturday orthopedic, sports medicine visits
Mercy Health Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine is now offering Saturday clinic hours – adding additional access to comprehensive orthopaedic care.
Saturday morning hours are now available from 8 a.m.-noon at Mercy Health – Perrysburg Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine, 12623 Eckel Junction Rd. (Entrance C). Walk-ins are welcome from 8-9 a.m.
“Mercy Health is looking to expand access to orthopaedic care for those who have difficulty fitting a doctor’s appointment into their weekday schedule,” said Zach Boone, PA-Ca, Mercy Health – Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine. “This Saturday morning clinic is especially convenient for those athletes who may have experienced and injury during a Friday-night game.”
A range of services are available, including, but not limited to in-suite radiology services, bracing, injections, medication and additional testing and treatment for sports injuries such as sprains and strains.
“What we’re really trying to do is open access points. It’s all about finding ways to enhance community access to high-quality care,” Boone said.

Magruder Hospital August programs
The Multiple Sclerosis Support Group meets in the Magruder Hospital Conference Center on the second Tuesday each month from 6-7:30 p.m.
The next meeting will be Aug. 13, when a Magruder physical therapist will talk about and demonstrate different ways of stretching.

Monthly lab screening
Community lab screenings are offered on the second Thursday of each month from 8-11:30 a.m. in the Magruder Community Clinic, 730 Jefferson St., Port Clinton.
The main lab test is a CBC, CMP and lipid profile, which includes liver and kidney function, fasting blood sugar, cholesterol, HDL/LDL, triglycerides and a complete blood count (red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets in the blood) for $50.
Add-ons are available, including a lipid profile ($20), hemoglobin A1C ($20), PSA (prostate specific antigen, $30), TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone, $25) and vitamin D ($35).
Appointments are required and can be made by calling 419-301-4304. Participants are asked to fast for 12 hours prior to their appointment time but can have water. No insurance is accepted – payment may be made by cash, check or credit card (no American Express).
Ask the Expert
Mercy Health continues the monthly Ask the Expert series on Thursday, Aug. 15, from 12:30-1:30 p.m., with a focus on “Prepping for Homeownership.”
Financial coach and housing counselor Lisa Urbanyi of the NeighborWorks Financial Opportunity Center will offer helpful insights for looking for a new home.

Life Line Screenings
Residents living in and around the Genoa area can learn about their risk for cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, diabetes and other chronic, serious conditions with Life Line Screenings set for Saturday, Aug. 24, at Genoa American Legion Post 324, 302 West St. Free parking will be available.
Screenings can check for:
• The level of plaque buildup in arteries, related to risk for cardiovascular disease, stroke and overall vascular health.
• HDL and LDL cholesterol levels.
• Diabetes risk.
• Kidney and thyroid function, and more.

2024 Summit on Aging
The Ottawa County Task Force on Aging will host the Summit on Aging on Tuesday, Sept. 10, at St Paul United Church of Christ, 165 N. Toussaint St., Oak Harbor. Registration and light breakfast offerings will start at 8:30 a.m.; presentations will be given from 9 a.m.-noon.
The Ottawa County Summit on Aging is held annually to educate the public about issues impacting seniors, including abuse, neglect and exploitation. This year’s event will focus on some of the topic areas identified in the most recent Community Health Needs Assessment. The event will include speakers and demonstrations focusing on the areas of mental health, housing/senior living, physical activity and telehealth.

YMCA Parkinson's exercise group
A Parkinson’s Exercise Group meets Mondays and Wednesdays at noon at the Eastern Community YMCA, 2960 Pickle Rd., Oregon.
This 60-minute class is for those with Parkinson’s that do not use a cane or walker. The class aims to improve motor skills with gait, strength and dexterity exercises. There is a $25 fee for each three-month session. The fall session will runs September-November. Participants can join mid-session.
