Oregon student wins at Nationals
Clay High School Senior Emma Fuller qualified and competed in Computer Modeling, an individual judged event at the Business Professionals of America (BPA) National Conference held in May in Chicago.
Competing for the first time at the national level, Fuller garnered top honors by finishing first in her preliminary round and then first in the final round of competition, edging out participants from across the United States and world.
She finished third at the state competition to earn her ticket to nationals.
“Having the opportunity to be a part of BPA not only gave me the opportunity to compete and show off my talents, but also helped me learn skills and make connections that will benefit me going into college this fall,” Fuller said. “The biggest person I want to thank is my programming teacher and BPA advisor Mrs. (Rhonda) Hildebrand. She does so much for not only her students but BPA as a whole and I feel like she does not get thanked enough.
“Her dedication to helping me do the best I could is definitely the reason I made it to nationals in the first place. I also want to acknowledge and thank the Oregon City School Board, OCS administration, Career Tech and OCFT for assisting with expenses for the National competition,” she said. “I think this financial support is extremely important to help give students like me the opportunity to attend these events, especially if expenses may be holding some back from choosing to compete.”
“Emma is the first female to place first in the 12 years we have qualified and competed at BPA national competition for our Clay High School BPA Chapter,” Hildebrand said. “When you are working with computer science, one tends to teach a lot of boys. Emma has been a joy and inspiration to me and her classmates. She strives to be the best that she can be and even though she is a little stubborn when accepting help, she will not stop until she figures it out. Her perseverance will always serve her well. I will greatly miss Emma as she continues on to her next adventures in life.“
Fuller also earned the Student of the Year in the Programming and Software Development Career Technology Program at Clay High School and served as the local BPA Chapter president. She plans to attend the University of Toledo majoring in Computer Science and Engineering.
Fellow Clay student, junior Andrew Amborski, also competed at the BPA National Competition in the Database Applications event and finished in the top 50%.
