Audrey H. Yackee

Audrey H. Yackee, 97, lifelong resident of Martin, Ohio, passed away on January 5, 2024, at Ayden of Oregon, Oregon, Ohio. Audrey was born in Martin on October 21, 1926, the daughter of Art and Nina (Post) Witt, above her grandfather’s grocery store where her family lived.

Audrey graduated from Genoa High School in 1944 and later met Russell E. Yackee, a Genoa resident. She and Russ were married on April 24, 1950, at the former St. John’s United Church, on Sixth Street, Genoa and spent the next 63 years together until his death on November 29, 2013.

At a very young age Audrey started working at her grandfather’s store which sold groceries, hardware, gas, and a little of everything. Eventually Audrey’s father purchased the store which was the center of activity in town and included the Martin Post Office. Audrey eventually started working as a clerk for the post office and was a fixture there until her retirement. The store eventually closed but the post office is still located in the same building.

Audrey was a kind and giving person and was always there to help anyone in need. She especially looked out for those in Martin, cooking or baking something special, stopping in for a visit, or sending a thoughtful card. Audrey had a little “activist” in her blood as well. When there were several accidents between trains and vehicles on the martin crossings, she worked with local and state governments along with the railroad, to have lights and gates installed to help prevent any more deaths. She and her husband were dedicated members of St. John’s United Church of Christ and assisted with many activities over the years.

Audrey is survived by her son, Lee (Sandy Lau) Yackee, special daughter, Sharon Dippman, grandchildren, Brodie, Brenna, Rene, Jason and Robin, and several great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Husband, daughter, Beth Hagarty, sisters, Elizabeth “Babe” Fisher, Irene Moritz, and Dorothy Johnson.

Visitation for Audrey will be held on Sunday, January 14, 2024, from 12:00-1:30 PM, at St. John’s United Church of Christ, 1213 Washington Street, Genoa, 43430, followed by a service at 1:30 PM. Interment will take place at Clay Township Cemetery, Genoa. It is suggested that memorials, in her name, be directed to St. John’s United Church of Christ or the Donor’s Choice. Lee and his family would like to extend a very heartfelt thank you to Audrey’s caregiver, Tina Tasker for her loving care and compassion, it will never be forgotten.

The Robinson-Walker Funeral Home & Crematory of Genoa is assisting with arrangements. Online condolences may be shared with the family at
