As of last Wednesday, one person involved in a high speed chase in Lucas and Ottawa counties remained at large and two other others were taken into custody.
The chase started in Erie Township when a deputy of the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office checked on a vehicle sitting in a no-parking zone along State Rt. 2 on April 10 at approximately 3:20 a.m.
The vehicle fled at a high rate of speed and was pursued by deputies through Benton Township and into Lucas County at speeds estimated as high as 130 MPH. The vehicle turned around, returning to Ottawa County where it left the roadway and crashed into a drainage ditch in Carroll Township.
Three persons fled from the vehicle and the pursuing deputies requested assistance from the department’s K9 unit.
Two persons were located, taken into custody, and are being held in the Ottawa County Detention Facility. James Putnam, 18, Toledo, was charged with failure to comply with an order or signal of a police officer, a third degree felony, and obstructing official business, a fifth degree felony. Melanie Ann Keil, 20, Toledo, was charged with obstructing official business, a second degree felony.
Drones and K9 units were used in the search but the third suspect wasn’t located.
Anyone with information about the incident should contact the sheriff’s office at 419 734-4404.
The Oak Harbor Police Department, Carroll Township Police Department, and Ohio State Highway Patrol assisted the sheriff’s office.
