Press wins first place in Ohio for investigative story

Press news staff Kelly J. Kaczala, news editor, J. Patrick Eaken, sports editor, and freelance reporter Melissa Burden won first place in the non-daily investigative category of the Press Club of Cleveland’s Ohio Excellence in Journalism awards at a banquet in June.

The winning entry, “Wollenbecker mum on time sheet `error’ at Sunoco,” investigated an Oregon paramedic, Don Wollenbecker, Jr., who left a second job at Sunoco Refinery on Dec. 26, 2007, three hours before he had signed out so he could start his shift at the Oregon Fire Department.

 BP awards $10,000 energy grant to Cardinal Stritch

BP has awarded a $10,000 energy grant to Cardinal Stritch High School to educate students about multiple methods of recycling and conserving energy.

The grant, entitled “The Green Cardinal Project” is designed to combine visual, computer and language arts to help students increase the recycling rate at the school. Art students will paint colorful classroom receptacles for collecting recyclable materials, computer and art students will design flyers and posters for display and distribution and English students will write scripts for a multi-media video presentation to support the program.

Chevy Camaro SS to be raffled off to benefit homeless

Harbor House, a transitional housing facility dedicated to helping single homeless women recover from chemical dependency, is hosting a car raffle to raise funds to benefit its mission. The car, a 2010 Chevy Camaro SS is aqua blue metallic with white stripes. It has a sunroof, leather heated seats, a six-speed transmission, a V-8 engine with 400 horsepower and a Rally Sport Package. The car can be seen at Dunn Chevy Buick in Oregon.

Only 2,000 tickets have been printed. Cost is $50. Call 419-244-6300 or visit www.harbor-house.org.

Bay Park Community Hospital has been recognized for its pollution prevention methods by the Practice Greenhealth, a trade organization. The hospital was awarded a Partner for Change Award for its mercury elimination, waste reduction and pollution prevention programs.

The hospital was also awarded a GOLD (Great Options in Low-fat Dining) Award from the Toledo-Lucas County Health Department. The Bay Café won the award for providing menu options that allow diners to have control over their dietary needs while promoting healthy eating habits.

Up the ladder
Tom Wulf has been promoted to mortgage loan officer at First Federal Bank in Genoa. He has been with First Federal since March 2001. In his position, he is responsible for the origination of mortgage and home equity loans as well as the duties performed by the assistant branch manager.

Wulf earned his Associates Degree in Business Management from Owens Community College and is a member of the Genoa Area Chamber of Commerce, Village of Genoa Audit Committee and is the Treasurer for the Genoa Area Local Schools Levy Committee. He resides in Curtice.


Golf
Hidden Hills will host its 29th annual ladies day golf outing Wednesday, July 15. The event will raise funds for the Alzheimer Association. Sponsors, donors and teams can call the club at 419-849-3693.
