E. Toledo Family Center honors youths, volunteers and staff

Juan Garces is the first recipient of the William Carswell Coach of the Year Award from the East Toledo Family Center.

Garces coaches a number of teams at the center and was recognized for his devotion to building strong character while teaching youths to do their best versus being the best.

Carswell, the East Toledo businessman who was murdered in December, is the namesake of the new award. Rodger Dodsworth, spokesman for the center, said Carswell coached youth sports when he was legally blind and had to employ assistant coaches to relay instructions to his players on the court. Carswell’s ability to overcome his limitations and his desire to build strong character in young athletes inspired the staff to name the new award after him.
