Press wins five awards in state contest
The Press won five awards at The Ohio Newspaper Association’s annual convention held last Thursday in Columbus.

The Press competed in the category with the 15 largest weekly newspapers in the state.

Kelly Kaczala, editor, and Melissa Burden, freelance writer, won a first place for in-depth reporting for their coverage of alleged police and mayoral misconduct in the City of Oregon. The judges wrote, “The level of reporting and source hunting helped propel this unique and engaging article to the forefront of the list.”

John Szozda, Press general manager, won a first place in column writing for his submission of three columns. One was about a mother’s fight to provide services for her autistic son and her hope he would eventually lead a normal life. Another column dealt with the deaths of three Woodmore students and the different responses from school officials.

The Press news staff also won a third place award for news coverage. In addition, The Press won a third place in the features category for its coverage of the June 5th tornado. Judges wrote, “Heroic effort to cover the aftermath of a killer tornado that devastated the local community and made national news…Overall, a comprehensive, hyper local focus is found on nearly every page.”

A special section celebrating the 75th anniversary of Pearson Park also won a third place.
