E. Toledo Family Center honors youths, volunteers and staff
Juan Garces is the first recipient of the William Carswell Coach of the Year Award from the East Toledo Family Center.
Garces coaches a number of teams at the center and was recognized for his devotion to building strong character while teaching youths to do their best versus being the best.
Carswell, the East Toledo businessman who was murdered in December, is the namesake of the new award. Rodger Dodsworth, spokesman for the center, said Carswell coached youth sports when he was legally blind and had to employ assistant coaches to relay instructions to his players on the court. Carswell’s ability to overcome his limitations and his desire to build strong character in young athletes inspired the staff to name the new award after him.
A number of other individuals were recognized last Wednesday at the center’s annual meeting. They included: Ana Martinez, Reddish Leadership Award, given to the individual who displays the ability to become a future leader in the community by demonstrating sportsmanship, character and setting examples; Shannon Miller, Youth of the Year, for achieving high academic standards and demonstrating the ability to work with and lead others; Kathleen Sheets, the Century Award; Katie Boerst, recipient of the East Toledo Neighborhood House Alumni Scholarship Award and John Szozda, the Dorie Steinmetz Memorial Community Service Award.
Volunteer awards went to Butch Ross, Stacy Baer, Angela Rudnicki, Tonya Rucki and Joseph Moran.
Staff Awards went to Danielle Ankenbrandt and Michelle Gorsuch. Program Awards went to Thomas Baer for athletics and Brian Scott for tutoring. And, senior director awards went to Vince and Jean Donofrio and John and Nancy Fulop.
Service Awards were given to Orchard Villa, Toledo Community Foundation and Paramount Advantage.
Years of service awards went to Karen Cassaubon, 15 years, and Tanisha Pettaway and Mary Pustay, five years.

City spokesman to speak about Chinese buying The Docks Brad Peebles, commissioner of the department of development for the City of Toledo, will speak to the public about the pending deal that involves the city selling The Docks.
Peebles will appear before the East Toledo Club Thursday, February 17, Noon at The Weber Block, Front and Main in East Toledo. The public is invited.
Peebles has been working closely with Toledo Mayor Mike Bell and the Dashing Pacific Group, which is negotiating to buy riverfront restaurant complex for $2.15 million.
He recently spoke to the Eastern Maumee Bay Chamber of Commerce trying to allay fears about selling a city asset to foreign investors.
Peebles said the Chinese toured 20 or so communities across the United States before choosing Northwest Ohio. He is encouraged by their approach to investing. They want Mayor Bell to provide an overview of the cultural, industrial and commercial assets of Northwest Ohio and a list of the types of businesses that would be a good fit for our community. The investors would target their efforts to those businesses.
Prior to joining the City of Toledo, Peebles was executive director of the River East Revitalization Corporation, the organization partly responsible for development of The Docks.
