The Bureau of Motor Vehicles agency in Bowling Green was recently presented with the Front Line Award from Donate Life Ohio, a statewide consortium representing organ and tissue recovery agencies, according to a news release from Life Connection of Ohio.

The Front Line Award was created eight years ago by Donate Life Ohio to recognize the people working the “front line” at the BMV agencies throughout the state. Each year, four agencies are recognized for their efforts to increase the number of registered organ and tissue donors in Ohio.

This marks the seventh year in a row that the Bowling Green BMV is being recognized. With a consent rate of 66.3 percent (6,422 out of 9,680), the Bowling Green BMV had the highest percentage of people become registered donors when renewing or receiving their driver’s licenses or State I.D.’s in 2009 in District Four (comprised of 29 counties in northwest Ohio). Also located in Wood County, the Perrysburg BMV agency had the second highest percentage in the district with 62.7 percent saying “yes” to donation. In 2009, 54 percent of Ohioans registered their decision to be a donor.

Currently, there are more than 107,000 people on the National Transplant Waiting List. Of the more than 3,100 Ohioans waiting for a life-saving transplant, 209 people await a kidney at the University of Toledo Medical Center.
