Bay Park earns Gold Award For excellence
Bay Park Community Hospital has received the Gold Level Award from the Ohio Partnership for Excellence following the organization’s assessment of the Malcolm Baldrige Criteria for Performance Excellence.
The Gold Level recognizes organizations demonstrating excellence and continuous improvement in seven areas: leadership, strategic planning, customer and market focus, measurement, analysis and knowledge management, human resource focus, process management and results.
The hospital will be recognized by the Ohio Partnership for Excellence at a September ceremony to be held in Newark, Ohio.
A local woman was one of two employees in the tourism industry to be recognized for their contributions by Destination Toledo, Inc. (formerly the Greater Toledo Convention & Visitors Bureau).
Tina Jaco was selected as the recipient of the Hospitality Employee of the Year, for her outstanding efforts in extending gracious hospitality to visitors of the region. Tina has worked as a server at Maumee Bay Resort since its opening in May 1991. Nominated for her positive attitude and infectious smile, Tina was recognized for exceptional guest service as well as her willingness to mentor new employees at the Resort and impart the importance of each employee in positively representing the area to visitors.
Joe Napoli, President and General Manager of the Toledo Mud Hens was presented the Tourism Impact Award for his work not only in the revitalization of the Mud Hens baseball franchise, but also for bringing hockey and arena football to the new downtown Toledo arena and working to streamline the recruitment and management of the three sports teams that will call Toledo home by the end of 2010.
Organizations from across the Greater Toledo area were encouraged to nominate hospitality employees for the Hospitality Employee Award in recognition of their outstanding service to visitors and guests. A committee narrowed the nominations down to three finalists and then selected with winner. The awards were presented by County Commissioner Pete Gerken and Dave Nolan, President of Destination Toledo, Inc., at the recent Commissioner’s Conference on Tourism.
According to July 2008 statistics from the Ohio Department of Development, tourism in Northwest Ohio brought in $4.7 billion in sales, $1.3 billion in wages, $641 million in taxes and 63,000 employed workers. In Lucas County tourism generated $1.6 billion in sales, $421 million in wages, $208 million in taxes and created 19,000 private sector jobs.
Venetia Meyer, of the health information management department at Bay Park Community Hospital, has been named employee of the year.
Meyer was selected for her dedication to customer service to both patients and families.
The award is given annually to an employee who has served the hospital for at least six months.
Rick Reichow, Farmers Insurance agent, has been inducted into the Farmers’ “Topper Club” for his outstanding sales achievement in 2008. Reichow, a Northwood resident, graduated from Cardinal Stritch High School and Urbana University. His office is located in Perrysburg.
Brad Sander, assistant branch manager at GenoaBank, has been awarded the 2009 Ottawa County Leadership Award for his leadership and dedication to the Ottawa County community. The award was presented at the Leadership Ottawa County Graduation dinner, held Wednesday, May 20.
Sander was recognized for both his personal involvement, and the involvement of GenoaBank in community activities.
Leadership Ottawa County is a community leadership development program that annually brings community leaders together to exchange knowledge and learn about diverse areas of interest in the community as well as share their own unique experiences and backgrounds.
The bottom line
GenoaBank announced to shareholders at the recent annual meeting 2008 net income totaled $1.8 million.
Assets have grown by $84 million, or 50 percent since 2003; with assets totaling approximately $252 million at year end 2008. In the last six years, deposits grew by approximately 50 percent, or $71 million; totaling approximately $211.3 million at year end 2008. Capital, or shareholder equity, has grown to more than $19.1 million at year end 2008, a growth of more than 43 per cent since 2003.
“We are very pleased with our growth over the past six years,” said Martin P. Sutter, GenoaBank president and CEO, “especially when you take into consideration today’s economic conditions.”
Sutter also reported financial highlights from the first quarter of 2009. Net income totaled more than $389 thousand and total assets approximately $254 million.
The Andersons has announced a first quarter cash dividend of 8.75 cents per share payable July 22.
There are approximately 18.2 million common shares outstanding.

Scott Brown, will present a seminar entitled “Frontline Service Pro” Wednesday, June 10, 9:00 to 11:00 am at the Ottawa County Resource Center in Oak Harbor.
The seminar is geared for new employees and inexperienced managers. Brown will cover stress on the frontlines, conflict resolution and re-evaluating your attitude among other topics.
