Armed with brochures and signature petitions, Fostoria Mayor John Davoli introduced himself at last week’s meeting of the Lake Township trustees as part of his campaign for a seat on the Wood County Board of Commissioners.
If elected, he said he would try to regularly attend meetings of local jurisdictions throughout the county.
Davoli has been mayor of Fostoria for 10 years and was a city councilmember before that.
He said he’s running as an independent.
“I think it’s the best way to go,” he said.
Town hall State Representative Dennis Murray (D-Sandusky) has scheduled a town hall meeting for Feb. 22 from 6-7:30 p.m. at the public library in Port Clinton to hear from constituents in the 80th House District.
The library is located at 310 Madison Street.
Commission created Gov. Ted Strickland has signed a bill to create the State of Ohio War of 1812 Bicentennial Commission. Senate Bill 93 is sponsored by Rep. Murray and State Sen. Steve Buehrer (R-Delta).
“The War of 1812 is significant to Ohio not only because it was waged in over 31 counties across the state, but because it solidified American control of Ohio and the Old Northwest Territory,” said Rep. Murray. “[Oliver Hazard] Perry gained a complete victory in this battle, which was one of the largest naval battles of the War of 1812 and ensured American control of the lake for the remainder of the war. Perry's monument stands in testament to that feat and our unrivaled peaceful border with our northern neighbors.”
The Bicentennial Commission will plan celebrations and educational events to commemorate the bicentennial and to raise awareness of Ohio residents and the nation about Ohio’s role in the War or 1812, and improve preservation efforts on the War of 1812 sites across the state, he said.
