Members of the Ottawa County Stormwater Committee recently toured the Carroll Township water treatment plant.
Plant superintendent Henry Biggert told the group the facility serves more than 1,300 residences and businesses and treats up to 2 million gallons of water a day.
Because the plant draws water from Lake Erie, invasive species like zebra mussels can be a problem for the plant’s intake system, Biggert told the group.
The storm water committee was reformed earlier this year by Crystal Dymond, a technician with the Ottawa Soil and Water Conservation District, and has been discussing control measures required by the National Pollution Discharge Elimination System.
Control methods focus on water quality by preventing pollutants from entering waterways when it rains.
