William Sorg honored
On Jan. 14, the Ottawa County Commissioners recognized Ottawa County veteran William “Bill” Sorg, of American Legion Post 279, Elmore.

Sorg was drafted into the United States Army in March 1969. After training, he was deployed to Cam Ranh Bay, Vietnam, with the 506th Infantry, 101st Airborne Division, Phan Thiet. On April 8, 1970, during a patrol on Hill #74, his squad was attacked and nine soldiers, including Sorg were injured.

He participated in four combat missions during his time in theater. His awards include the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, Army Commendation Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal (four bronze stars), Vietnam Campaign Medal w/60 device, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon (two) and Combat Infantry Badge.

Sorg opened the regularly scheduled meeting for the Ottawa County Board of Commissioners by leading the Pledge of Allegiance, after which he was honored with a plaque presented by Jo Ellen Regal, Ottawa County Commissioners’ president.

Sorg’s wife, Dianne; his mother. Bobbie and son, John were on hand for the presentation. “It was an honor for me to present the proclamation to Bill and to recognize his bravery, his sacrifices he made, and to thank him for his service to our country,” Regal said.

The County Commissioners recognize a veteran within the Ottawa County community the first or second Tuesday meeting of every month.

In February, a veteran from the American Legion Post 324, Genoa will be honored.

Commissioners appointed
Thomas L. Cashen III and Ron E. Distel have been appointed commissioners on the Ottawa County Veterans Service Commission Board. They were sworn in Jan. 9 by Ottawa County Court of Common Pleas Judge Bruce Winters.

Cashen, who will represent the American Legion, was appointed to fill a one-year term. He is a Persian Gulf War veteran who served honorably in the U.S. Navy.

Red Cross volunteers honored
The American Red Cross of Ottawa County recognized volunteers for outstanding service at a recent holiday gathering held at the home of Deena Camerato.
