Historical society holds picnic

Nearly four dozen Ottawa County Historical Society members, friends and guests gathered at the Wolcott Keeper’s House, 9999 Bayshore Rd. in Marblehead Aug. 25 for their annual potluck picnic.

The occasion marked the debut of a new book written and read for the crowd by member and former elementary school teacher Nel Adcock, from Lakeside.

The event was also the public debut of the refurbished fireplace oven. OCHS President Paul Moon displayed two sets of maple sugar molds and a clay pipe holder that would have been hung on the wall of a tavern. Visitors would sit around the fire and smoke and share the news of the day with other travelers. The pieces were donated by the Rev. Bob and Ann Butcher.

The regular season of open houses ends Sept. 3, but the house will be open Saturday, Sept. 11, from 1 to 5 p.m. and Oct. 9 for the Lighthouse Festival.

The Keeper’s House is a project of the OCHS, which purchased it in 1989 and has restored and maintained the house and grounds through donations, grants and fundraising. Learn more about the society at www.thekeepershouse.org
