Lutheran Homes residents celebrate There was a bright glow of birthday candles at the Lutheran Home of Toledo last week, as two residents celebrated milestone birthdays.
On April 6, Esther Hoffman turned 105. Born in Riga Township, Mich. In 1906, she was one of four children. She married Otto Hoffman Dec. 11, 1937 and they were married for 40 years.
She worked at Nu-Way Stretch Suspender Company as a billing clerk. Esther enjoyed sewing, writing to friends and traveling, often driving when she and Otto would take car trips.
Esther, who came to the Lutheran Home at Toledo in July 2003, remains active in the card club, playing bingo and attending church functions at St. Marks Lutheran Church.
As she celebrated her birthday, she credits her longevity to genetics – her two sisters lived to be in their 90s – and to a positive attitude, a healthy diet, regular walks and a strong faith.
Lutheran Homes resident Ira Austin turned 100 on April 10. Born in Cleveland, Irma moved to Europe at age 1 and returned to the U.S. 10 years later.
She and her husband Walter were the parents of two sons, Joseph and Michael. She is retired from Acme Specialty, and is a member of St. Stephen’s Church. Her interests include bingo and reading.
Asked her secret to achieving the century milestone, Irma says keeping busy with lots of reading and traveling to bowling tournaments with her husband.
Irma also noted she loves the springtime when “everything wakes up.”
