The Eastwood High School Alumni Band will perform at the Oct. 1 home football game vs. Genoa. Alumni will gather in the Eastwood High School gym at 5 p.m. for social time, with a rehearsal at 5:45 p.m. All former Eastwood band members are welcome to perform. Those not able to play or march are welcome to come socialize.
The Alumni Band will perform during the pre-game show with the marching band. Alumni are also invited to play in the stands with the marching band during the game. A limited number of instruments are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Baking contest winners
For the second consecutive year, bakery delicacies took center stage Aug. 28 at the annual German-American Festival.
First place in the baking contest went to Jennifer Klempner, of Toledo for her recipe Prinzregententorte (Prince Regent Torte). Carolyn Schimmel, of Huron, earned second place with her Apple Squares, and Klempner also claimed third place with her Bienenstich (Bee Sting Cake).
Jackie Beutler, of Temperance, Mich., received honorable mention for her German Apple Torte.
Judges included Mary Alice Powell, retired Blade food editor; Chef Ron Banas, of The Northwest Ohio Culinary Institute and Marcia Jess, Ohio State Extension, Ottawa County.
Groove in the Grove
Clay High Alumni & Friends Association will present the 14th Annual Groove in the Grove and Hall of Fame Induction Oct. 2 from 6 p.m. to midnight.
Dinner will be served from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. The Hall of Fame Induction will follow at 7:45 p.m. in the Pavilion. Dancing in the cheesehouse will follow, along with cards, games and reminiscing in the Pavilion. Casual attire suggested.
Inductees include Betty Carstensen (posthumously); and Judge Jeffery B. Keller.
The cost is $20 for dinner, drinks and dancing (advance sales only); $15 for drinks and dancing; and $10 after 10 p.m. (drinks and dancing).

The Suburban Singers are looking for more voices for the fall and winter seasons. No auditions are required. Rehearsals are held at the First Presbyterian Church in Perrysburg.

Levi Phillips, of Oregon, has been appointed to serve as a Congressional Page in the U.S. House of Representatives for the upcoming fall term.
Phillips was selected for the position on the basis of his academic record, recommendations from community leaders and an autobiographical essay. He will work directly with members of Congress and will help prepare the House for each day’s business. He will attend the Paige School before each legislative day, where he will complete junior-level coursework.
The son of Thomas and Karen Phillips, he is a student at Toledo Christian School.
