Free vascular screenings

Free carotid, aortic and peripheral arterial disease testing will be available June 14 from 1 to 4 p.m. in the diagnostics department at Bay Park Community Hospital in Oregon.

To be eligible for the screenings, participants must be over the age of 65, or over the age of 50 with a history of one or more of the following risk factors: diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, smoking or a family history of vascular disease.

Selling a “senior” home
Area senior citizens are invited to join Otterbein Portage Valley at the Wood County Senior Center June 10 at 9 a.m. for “From Here to There Breakfast,” a seminar on selling a senior home.

The seminar will be hosted by two local experts – Linda Kilgus, RE/MAX Preferred Realtor who is a designated Senior Specialist, and designer Rose Toth, with Rose Custom Interiors.

Women’s Connection

All area women are invited to a “Style of Summer” luncheon and program being sponsored by the Toledo East Women’s Connection June 10 at the Bayside Boardwalk, 2759 Seaman St., Oregon.

The program will include a summer style show by “Change of Seasons” resale shop in Perrysburg, which is owned by Betty Hill. There will also be musical entertainment and a presentation by Shirley Davidson, from Mansfield, Ohio, on “A Busy Mom Shares Her Most Unforgettable Memory.”

Doors will open at 11:45 a.m. for the noon luncheon and program. The price is $10.50, all inclusive. For reservations, call Dorothy Francis at 419-691-9611.

Summerfest weekend

Summerfest Weekend will be held May 28 and 29 at the American Legion Grounds in Pemberville.

Friday activities include a corn hole tournament ($25 per team entry fee) and square dance and country-western music by Sawbuck Band ($6 admission).

On Saturday, The Speds will perform rock and roll music from 8 p.m. to midnight. Gates open at 6 p.m. each day. Refreshments including beer, soft drinks and food will be available both nights. Proceeds will benefit S.A.L. Squadron 183-sponsored programs.

Memorial Day ceremony
Genoa American Legion Post #324 will hold a Memorial Day Ceremony Monday, May 31 at 9 a.m. at Clay Township Cemetery, Fulkert and Opfer Lentz roads.

Guest speaker will be BU2 Destin McClafin of the US Navy Support Group, Toledo. Units participating along with the Legion include the Genoa American Legion Auxiliary, the Genoa American Legion Band, the Genoa High School Band, the Boy Scouts and the Girl Scouts.

The public is invited to bring lawn chairs and help honor area veterans. In the event of rain, the ceremony will be held in the Genoa High School auditorium.

Road closing

Otter Creek Road and the York Street intersection will be closed to all traffic from 7 a.m. on Monday, May 17, to 5 p.m. on Friday, May 28, to allow for the construction of the Otter Creek Road Improvement Project. The signed detour route for Otter Creek Road will be Corduroy Road, Lallendorf Road, Cedar Point Road. The signed detour route for York Street will be Wheeling Street, Consaul Street/Corduroy Road, Lallendorf Road.

`No Father’s Day’
This coming June, when people around the country are celebrating Father’s Day, Humane Ohio - a non-profit organization that operates a low-cost spay/neuter clinic and pet food bank - will be doing just the opposite.
The group has planned a “No Father’s Day” promotion and will neuter male cats during the month of June for a special rate of $20 in an effort to prevent unwanted litters. Cat owners who wish to take advantage of the offer must mention the “No Father’s Day” promotion when they call to schedule their appointment.

Helping Rt. 2

There will be a Helping Rt. 2 meeting on Tuesday, May 11 at 3 p.m. at the Oregon Library. The meeting is open to the public.

Lighthouse Festival
There are many opportunities to help the Toledo Lighthouse Waterfront Festival, planned July 10 and 11 at the Maumee Bay State Park. There is a Lighthouse Photo Contest, and arts and crafts applications are being accepted. For registration forms and more information, go to

About Boating Safely
The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary will offer its “About Boating Safely” course June 3, 10, 17 and 24 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Alternative Plumbing, 6205 N. Summit St, Toledo.

The eight-hour NASBLA-approved course covers basic safety practices as well as state and federal regulations. Many insurance agencies offer discounts for boaters who successfully complete the course.
